Fish Food & Snorkeling

Post by Marianne »

Hi Guys,

I came across a link for something called Snorkle Snax. Have any of you used any commercially made fish food while snorkeling? Does it work well, and more importantly, is it safe for the fish?

Hi Marianne -

I have never used any sort of fish food when snorkeling but I know it is done commonly on Grand Cayman. I know this because the fish there are very bold and bit my husband and I while snorkeling - we didn't have any food, they just thought we did! :?

I remember a friend using crushed up cat food (seafood flavor) and it working pretty well.

Marianne...it's probably SAFE for the fish, but it's not safe for the eco-system. When this becomes a habit the reef's suffer. Adding extra food into the habitat causes probelms, and this is why Hanauma bay State park in Hawaii has banned the practice of feeding fish.

Hi Marianne,

If you check the NPS website, you will see that feeding fish in the National Park waters is prohibited.

You don't need to have any food with you to see the fish. They are abundant!

My nephew tried feeding dog biscuits to fish while snorkeling and managed to get his finger tip bitten. After that his nickname was Snapper.

He had been told not to feed the fish, but being a head strong 10 year old he was sneaking about.
