USAir 25.00 charge for second checked bag

Post by Connie »

Saw it on the news. Read it in the paper. After May 5th, 25.00 for second checked bag. $100.00 for 3-9 bags (each)

I can understand that the airlines are hurting, but i believe this is just going to make carrying on even harder. People are going to try to stuff whatever they can into the overheads and eventually alot of things just won't fit in the plane.

What's everybody think about this?

Thank goodness for Connections! I just shipped four boxes (one larger than the others...)for our stay in March...postage $150.00. Mary Pat said it's all there waiting for us! That's the way to go. (IMHO) It sure beats checking the luggage...paying for luggage...the airlines losing the luggage...waiting for the luggage...lugging the luggage...

I suppose I could live without the pool toys...and the St. Paddy's Day garb...and the snorkel gear...etc...but...nah!

One small carry on and the camera bag for me...piece of cake!

Jen, We were thinking about sending the snorkel gear ahead of time with some other things, but then how do you get the gear back home? Will you send it from connections? The other things we are sending will be used up on the trip so its just the gear in question.

Ksea...exactly! I almost hesitated to mention that I shipped four boxes! We do stay for three weeks...so...

Most of the stuff shipped is either consumed (shampoo/bug spray/etc.) or left behind for others to enjoy (pool toys). One of the boxes and part of another...StPD gear!...always a hit as we are there for the both the parade & the 17th!

The snorkel gear & ipod speakers get shipped back...along with any extra t-shirts that don't seem to fit in the carry-on!

Anything to not drag around the snorkel gear! HA!

Just be sure to email the girls at Connections prior, to set up an account. Label your box with both the physical address (6D Cruz Bay) and the PO Box 37. I write our last name on each side of the box(es) so they can easily identify it (them  ). They charge a nominal fee for storage. We arrive early enough to pick up our stuff same day. If you are arriving later...perhaps your villa rep can pick up for you if you cannot wait until the next morning.

Any other ??? pm me!

Jen, 3 weeks? That must be fabulous! Im jealous. Thanks for the shipping tips too.

Sorry, didnt mean to hijack the thread. Wherever we go we have a 1 checked bag limit per person, so the extra charges being implemented will not affect us. Yay!

I got the email from USAir this morning and while I know this is the new trend $25 seemed like a lot. Is that what other lines are charging? Of course, $25 is a good number to discourage the second bag. I would think twice about $25 but not $10. Psychology is interesting, isn't it? :)
But I am a dividend miles member so I guess I'm in the clear.

I think its great to shift costs to the people that incur them using approaches like fees for checked luggage. But, it only works if the airlines enforce carry-on restrictions. All it takes is one set of the selfish with oversized carry-ons to cut the carry-on capcity of a plane in half. Those just slightly too big bags have to go sideways and take up the space of two legal bags. I say tag them, check them and charge them. Oh, and wouldn't it be nice if people had to pay their baggage fees before they got in line for check-in?

Our goal for March is one checked bag down (polar bear) and no checked bags coming home. I'll have to leave the techni-ice at Bay House, but I don't expect to hear complaints.

Next, do we start charging people by weight and volume?

Cheers, RickG

The fee is only waived for Preferred Dividends members, not all. Also, keep in mind that the fee is charged one-way; so, you're looking at $50.

I just hope my next ski or golf vacation is not with US Airways because laundry and vacation just don't go together in my overpacked mind :D
