Trip Report part I

Post by jmq »

INTRO
Family of 3 third time to VIs. First time was STT Secret Harbour and STJ Estate Lindholm, second time was 2 weeks STJ Gallows, east end villa Cameron Cove, and Guavaberry on Virgin Gorda.
This time sorta spur of moment to take advantage of Gallows pay for 5 stay 7 off season rates. We had just done a big trip to Europe in May but figured that with prior trip experience and the help from this forum will help to control $.
That second trip was supposed to be last August to coincide with 25th anniversary but we had moved it up to April 06 because of fear of hurricanes, so the week+ before departure we watched nervously as the tropical depression that became Dean moved across Atlantic and was at one time aimed more north towards VIs.
Good thing it jogged slightly south and picked up speed and was past by 8/21, with no other stuff moving off coast of Africa.

BUCKET O’ BOLTS I
Day of departure was really cool and rainy so had to wear light jackets that would never be used on STJ.
Got a ride to airport from brother in law who had been first time to STT/STJ just 12 days prior to us, based mostly on the fact that they didn’t need passports and partly on seeing my photos of the place. We tend not to go on and on too much about our adventures because you never know what others really like. I wasn’t sure they would get it, but he did get hit big time by the island fever.
We watched their chocolate Lab when they went. How do you Lab owners ever get used to shedding, slobbering, and eating anything not nailed down - even stuff up on counters?
Anyways, nice to get reciprocal ride to airport. Usually go out of EWR but AA out of PHL had better rate. Seems like few if any nonstops off season, but had next best thing if you have to connect which is to go with no plane change, just brief stop in SJU.
And this plane was a real old 757 that rattled and rolled about an hour late down the runway due to the rainy weather, making us miss the 3pm ferry after the short stop in SJU. Funny how it takes the big planes just 19 min vs 35 for the puddle jumpers.

SHOULD KNOW BETTER BUT HAD BRAIN LOCK I
Rum punch and wait for luggage not too bad in STT – both belts were working. We had grabbed bagels in PHL but hadn’t packed anything in carry on like power bars or PBJ sandwiches for the journey (duh! airtravel 101) so were pretty hungry by the time we wandered around downtown STT briefly before the 4pm ferry to STJ.

NICE START
Pretty smooth ride over, check into Gallows, get rum punch there too, get 3A = lower unit out on the Oceanside point. Great views, but not as nicely decorated as unit 1A we had last year.

Daughter and I stick foot into that warm Caribbean water and jump into pool to refresh. Decide to walk down to The Balcony for sunset dinner just like we did first night last year.

YOU WANT SUNSETS? WE GOT SUNSETS I
Enjoy first of what was to be many nice sunsets on this trip, fine food, and one our “island music” faves Jack Johnson playing on sound system.

[img]<a href="http://picasaweb.google.com/jmackq/07ST ... 3394"><img src="http://lh4.google.com/jmackq/RtWPzZfpeR ... 1.jpg"></a>
[/img]

We had the Mediterranean salad, crab cake app, pineapple glazed salmon with tomato/bacon risotto, seafood bouillabaisse, pork tenderloin, and the highlight of the night, a dense but light dark chocolate layer cake that was quite awesome.
Got chills at one point as I looked at my happy family enjoying the fine food, wonderful sights, and great music.
Walked back through light drizzle that really made the tree frogs sing. Even walking back past that Grande Bay monstrosity couldn’t spoil the mood.
Nice morning after some heavy overnight rain. Oh oh will that mean bugs? We’ll see.

NEW TRICKS I
For this trip, tried to be smart with the non-alc beach bevs, so brought down various powder mixes – lemonade, ice tea, Gatorade to mix up with ice water in 3 Nalgene bottles that were filled with cereal for trip down that we transferred to plastic bag upon arrival. Also threw in a “to go” coffee cup to take that last cup with us in the morning. These new tricks worked pretty sweet.
Confirmed that just about all the kitchen fussing we could take on vacation is making coffee, making up and cleaning the Nalgene bottle drinks, simple breakfast (from envelopes of oatmeal we brought with us, stuff from EveryTing shop at Gallows, etc.), microwave popcorn, and making rum drinks.
I don’t know how you villa-philes put in the time and effort to shop, prep, cook, and clean up big time meals while on vacation. God bless ya. We need a break from all that. Maybe easier and more cost effective with more people?

BUCKET O’ BOLTS II
In the morning, I call Paris Car Rental from lobby for pick up. They take me over in a nice looking blue Vitara that is to be our ride for rest of the week.
Paris is not mentioned here much at all, but they had an extra 15% off low season rate noted on their website which they’ll give you if you mention it when you call. So our Grand Vitara was only $357 for the week ($51 per day), which is pretty cheap, especially when you consider that I called to use Penns again and they wanted $90 something a day for similar vehicle.
The Paris vehicles were in decent enough shape, maybe not as new or nice across the board as some other companies, they were pleasant enough to deal with, although they do hit your cc for a $100 deposit right away.
Over at Paris, I wound up swapping the blue Vitara from them for a more beat up green one because the CD player didn’t work in the nice one.
Don’t know how smart that was, but you GOTTA have your tunes with you. It had decent tires and mechanically seemed OK when driven, but had a cracked windshield and other nicks.

NEW TRICKS II
On way back from Paris, went over to Pine Peace for some booze etc. Stopped at gas station to fill 3 floaty tubes we had brung with us. Hadn’t considered that until brother in law told us how much fun they had with them on their trip. Brought a little adaptor thingy that worked with the air hose at the gas station so it took 35 seconds to blow each one up instead of turning blue trying to blow it up ourselves.

Picked up the girls, stopped at Deli Grotto for nice choc chip banana bread and muffins to eat at first beach – Jumbie. Hadn’t been there prior trips. Tons of fry in water. The tubes were indeed cool to use.

Even though we have summer color, don’t want to overdo sun first day, back to town for a little Mongoose shopping and fine lunch at Sun Dog – jerk chicken quesadillas, white pizza salad, white artichoke chicken pizza. We love that place.

YOU WANT SUNSETS? WE GOT SUNSETS II
Back out to one of our faves Maho. Spot a big turtle there who we will wind up seeing there several more times.

As dusk approaches, use the Bullfrog combo sunscreen/bug juice stuff. Seems to work fine as only a few bugs even try to bother us as we enjoy a pretty spectacular sunset.

Back for dinner at Rhumblines. We had gone there last trip and were underwhelmed by it as most of the apps were overcooked. However, brother in law was much impressed by it 2 weeks prior so gave it another shot. Glad we did. Shared salad with lime/jalapeno shrimp, scallops, lobster tempora, and best ever spring rolls. Also has an outstanding silver Patron margarita topped with Grand Marnier = best I’ve had in a long time. I’m gonna have to buy that stuff to see if I can recreate that quality.

Up early next day to do another one of our fav things – enjoy Trunk before the crowds. Stop at Deli Grotto again to get blueberry scones to have on the beach.

I’M AN EXCELLENT DRIVER I
After the rain, head out to Coral Bay and Shipwreck Landing for early lunch. On those switchbacks just past Trunk, watched as a Ford Taurus couldn’t make it up the first switchback, sliding backwards, gave up and turned around.
Next in line just ahead of us watching this was a Wrangler rental. Those jeeps are like mountain goats, right?
Watched in amazement as this guy also failed, watching the front AND rear wheels fail to gain traction.
Couple of locals coming down right behind them in one of those old island 2 door bucket o’ bolts Vitaras were amused. We waved em down to confirm that the switchback wasnt blocked up ahead possibly causing these aborted attempts.
“Yeah Mon no problem”. Indeed, I gassed it BEFORE the apex of the switchback and zipped up no problem. My wife turned to me asked how did you do that and weren’t you worried?
Nah, same as going up a snow covered hill here in NJ – you need momentum before you hit the angle or slope – you cant be trying to accelerate on the steepest part, just maintaining the speed you already have. Besides, as I always tell my brother Raymond, I’m an excellent driver.

Good drinks and lunch at Shipwreck of grilled turkey club, blackened grouper, and beer battered grouper.

Over to Leinster for hike out to snorkel Waterlemon. Somewhat uneventful, not a lot of critters, no starfish = no great pics, plus the coral seems to be less healthy and colorful than in prior years, repeating a disconcerting trend I noticed on this trip. We were pretty lucky other times, so I cant complain.

Always something cool to see on this hike

After the snorkel and hike back, up to the smoothie truck for fruity refreshments and Buffett blasting from the truck, down Centerline and Jacobs Ladder to see that side of the island on the way back to Gallows.

YOU WANT SUNSETS? WE GOT SUNSETS III (and Iguanas too)
Snacks, drinks, amusing iguanas, and sunset at Gallows.

My daughter is devouring the last Harry Potter book. She saved it for the trip, successfully avoiding any spoilers. What a treat for her. We probably all fall asleep reading our books in bed by 9:30. Quite the party animals.

SHOULD KNOW BETTER BUT HAD BRAIN LOCK II
Wife wakes up with some itchy bug bites. Don’t know if she got em at the beach or in the condo. Daughter and I no bites. Why? Dawns on me – what soap you using? Oh, apple something or other shower gel.
I'm a guy, and stuff like that just confuses me (gel? how much do you use? do you squirt it on yourself or the wash cloth?) so I forgot about to remind her about the advice that has been offered here about going as fragrance free as possible when in the islands. D’oh!

That’s enough for now. This is too time consuming (but fun to re-live). To be continued…

Great report so far, loved it! Your pictures are great, I have a few that look very similar! We loved those cool cloud formations at sunset too. The floatie tubes look like great fun, I will put them on my list!

Geez - sorry if you need to scroll over to read text...that can be annoying.
Didnt look so bad in preview. Maybe it depends on monitor size?
Find it harder to control picture size from picasaweb than flickr.

Thanks for the report and pictures. Some of your shots are perfect!! I'm sooo jealous of the sunset pics everyone is posting. We didn't catch a single pretty sunset during our August trip. We love Trunk in the early morning. Looking forward to reading more!

Cool tip on the floaties...I might do that next trip.

JMG---Great report and great pic's. We have also found the food at Sun Dog to be very good. It sounds like I need to try Deli Grotto next time we're down.

Great trip report!

"I don’t know how you villa-philes put in the time and effort to shop, prep, cook, and clean up big time meals while on vacation. God bless ya. We need a break from all that. Maybe easier and more cost effective with more people?"

When we have a group of adults its hard to get everyone out the door on the same schedule. Once we get to the restaurant things get expensive fast - dinner for 8 with tip at Zozo's runs $660. Cooking dinner in is relaxing and folks can lounge around and goof off - while working on their tan lines. 6 or 8 people have their own party energy.

When its just the 2 of us or the kids are along we eat out more. Fewer hands to share the work and less social energy I guess?

Cheers, RickG

I love me a jmq report w/pics. Your DD has really grown up. Keep em coming!

I ALWAYS pickup some cheapie floats and tubes from Wally's before every trip! We love them, especially DD. She likes to pretend she's a piece of driftwood at every beach!!!
