Newbie Trip Report - Part 4...

Post by laura »

Day 7 - It Made the Kessel Run in less than Twelve Parsecs....

We woke up far, far too early for people who just got married the day before, but it was for a good cause. We were headed to the BVI's for a day of sun, fun, painkillers, snorkeling and did I mention the painkillers? Just checking.

J had charted a boat with Nauti Nymph and we headed down to the Westin, picking up some breakfast snacks at their marketplace before checking in at the dock. Everyone was in a seriously good mood and we were all bursting with anticipation. I commanded my new hubby to speak only in a British accent for the remainder of the day, which he tried to do, to my serious amusement. Our friends rolled their eyes at us, silly newlyweds.

We met Captain Patrick and all piled onboard of Nauti Nymph #47 (gosh I hope this wasn't the boat I saw on the On St John blog that went under at White Bay!). Beautiful boat and holy crap! was it fast!! It was 500 horsepower which I'm sure will mean something technical to someone but to me it just meant HOLD ON!!!!! And so we did and we were off, racing our way across the open sea surrounded by miles of beautiful scenery. I tried to get some quick pix but I was too afraid of dropping my camera and / or flying out of the boat that I gave up and just enjoyed the ride. We arrived at customs in Jost Van Dyke and Captain Patrick went to get us all checked in while we wandered around.

While the rest of my friends shopped for souvenirs in the store next to Foxy's I walked around taking a ridiculous amount of pictures as everything I saw just seemed like a postcard.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/9873290@N05/813364113/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1110/813 ... d62da5.jpg" width="500" height="342" alt="Jost Van Dyke"></a>

Foxy's was empty, it was only around 9am after all and we wound up at Corsairs for some early morning drinks that began innocently enough with waters and somehow ended up in bloody marys and shots from a wooden ski. Hey now, don't look at me, I was just an innocent bystander....a mere victim of circumstance one might say. I left the guys in the bar and plopped myself into a hammock. Eventually Captain Patrick rounded us up and we headed back to the boat for a quick trip to White Bay.

As soon as we pulled into White Bay I got a non-alcohol related sinking feeling in my stomach as I realized that I had misplaced my wallet. Feeling like the biggest jerk in the entire world, I explained to everyone that I must have accidentally set my wallet down somewhere around Corsairs. I was crushed but Captain Patrick reassured us and offered to run back to look for my wallet while we all hung out on White Bay. After a thousand thank you's to Captain Patrick we all jumped in the water and swam into shore.

Seeing my dejected expression, my new hubby decided that the British accent alone wouldn't be enough to cheer me up and he dragged my to the Soggy Dollar bar to get some painkillers into me, STAT! Well if that's not heaven in a glass....I don't know if it is the setting (probably) or their secret recipe but all my worries floated away. We all sat down at the coffee table and played a few spirited games of Jenga before retreating to hammocks to relax. I think we could have stayed here all day, night, week...and been perfectly happy but Captain Patrick returned triumphantly with my wallet in hand (now if that's not service...turns out I had dropped it under the hammock in front of Corsairs) and we were onto our next destination.

We stopped by Sandy Spit but it was pretty crowded here so we just took some quick pictures and then headed to the Willy T for lunch. We had a good, casual and fun lunch here, but I think we all wished we were still on White Bay. I'd love to see the Willy T at night though, I bet the place gets hopping.

After lunch we headed over to the Indians for some snorkeling. While most of us were experienced snorkelers, none of us had done a true open water snorkel before. I won't lie; I was kind of intimidated, especially as I observed the chop in the water. We all made the usual silly, nervous jokes about sharks and then collectively said screw it and jumped in. Since I was one of the better swimmers, I led the way stopping every now and again to make sure my entourage was all following.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/9873290@N05/832129207/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1122/832 ... e13bee.jpg" width="500" height="306" alt="The Indians - BVI's"></a>

The coral formations were beautiful, giant elkhorn, and brain corals and huge sea fans. I was hoping to finally see a turtle but no luck. We worked our way around the giant rock formations enjoying the sites while I periodically checked to make sure everyone was still accounted for. At one point D called me over, seems his snorkel slipped out of his mask and floated on down to depths unknown. He tried to snorkel a bit without it but that proved rather troublesome as you might imagine. We told everyone to carry on without us and we swam back to the boat. No worries, we had seen plenty.

After everyone had enough of snorkeling we braced ourselves for the roller coaster ride back to STJ. The water was a bit choppy that day but the real reason for the rocky ride were our shouts of excitement as the boat would lift off into the air for a moment and then come crashing down. Captain Patrick seemed to take a gleeful delight in seeing us tossed around and we kept egging him on with our shouts of more, more!! The faint of heart do not hang out with us as you can see. We slowed down and toured around St. John a bit as Captain Patrick pointed out sights. Eventually we had to return to customs to get checked in and sadly our day trip to the BVI's came to a close.

What a great time, we had such a blast!!

Next time.....A return to the scene of the crime at Trunk Bay, Zozo's and shark patrol at Caneel...

Nice report, nice pics - especially the palms/beach pic... really nice! I want to squeeze into the computer screen and swim to that beach, oh yeah! :D

Oh, and the painkiller/Jenga combo is brilliant! haha, that'll displace worries any day! :) Glad you got your wallet back.

I read this last night and again today - and laughed out loud both times.

Good stuff!

I left a wallet in a rental car on Tortola once. The guy at Thrifty drove it from Road Town to West End for me barely in time for me to catch the last ferry to STJ. This is a good illustration of why its a great idea to have a Captain.

Cheers, RickG

Ah - more material for “As the Newbie Turns”

As we left off – our heroine bride and “D” have joined forces in a beautiful ceremony to now become the “Dynamic Duel”.

Today they plan to invade the BVI’s under the cover of a honeymooning couple. Boarding their “Water Jet” – they are skipping the wave tops and decide to slip into the BVI’s via a tiny island known as Jost van Dyke. They know that the customs agents will be half asleep at this hour of the morning and they leave the dirty work of check-in to Capt. Pat.

Like bees to honey – they head off to Corsairs to start the liver damage. From water to bloody Mary’s to shots. Mind you that this is just the primer to come.

They soon board the “Water Jet” again and round the point to one of God’s greatest gifts – White Bay. This is when Laura realizes that her wallet is missing. But was this a per-meditated plan to get rid of Capt. Pat as she baits “New Hubby” to prime her full of Painkillers.

The custom agents are waking up by now a realized who they let in – so the “Dynamic Duel” decide to boot it to the refuge of the Willy T. to continue their liver damage. Seeing that they are so close to the “Baths” – they head to this rock formation for some great snorkeling and picture taking. They awe in the underwater beauty but wishing they were back on White Bay.

Finally Capt. Pat says that they have to head back. So knowing that they don’t have to pay duty on booze in their body – they load up.

Stay tune as our “Dynamic Duel” returns to the “Hitching Place” and scopes out Zozo’s looking for Zorro the masked man.

Great report and pictures – I’m luving your reports.

When I saw that bottom photo of the palms trees I thought I heard helicopters circling and Jim Morrison singing...
When we come to place where the sea and the sky collide
Throw me over the edge and let my spirit glide
