End of August on St John

Hello everyone

We have been planning our trip back to St John in July for our two year anniversary of getting married on island. Recently it seems all the flights from Boston have sky rocketed for the entire month of July and most of August. We usually go to St. John in the month of July but it looks like the flight prices don't go back down until the end of August. I know the restaurants start to close around this time. Does anyone have any insight about end of August early September? Any help would be appreciated!

Hi, Effie! The best way to time your stay for low airfares would be to travel when demand drops, which would be once school is back in session (after Labor Day, to cover all districts, and the Labor Day weekend travel surge). The water will be even warmer than in July, and the beaches will be much less crowded (not that they are ever that crowded to begin with). Sure, some restaurants will be closed, but when you start with over sixty, you will still have a lot of dining options left to choose from. Early September is peak storm season, but the odds are still very low that you will have your travel plans impacted; storm eyes are tiny, as is St. John, and the Atlantic is vast. Just be prudent and secure trip insurance. At ~4% of the sum you choose, it covers all sorts of contingencies. The other advantage of visiting St. John in September is that you get to enjoy all of summer where you live; we've taken to heading down to the villas for the last week of September, and the first week of October: shortly after our solar-heated NH pool becomes a bit too chilly, but before the foliage begins to ramp up.

Effie, we were staying in upper Chocolate Hole for Hurricane Earl in August/September 2010. We were lucky that we only lost power for one day. More often that not, power is out for much longer than what we experienced. The weather was awesome 2 days before we got hit (the calm before the storm) and awesome afterwards. However, most beaches were still too rough to swim or snorkel in. At that time of the year, we found that there are still plenty of good restaurants open. It is quieter and less crowded at the beaches. While we enjoyed the warm weather, warm water, less crowds and all around beauty of St. John, we will not plan a stay during the Hurricane Season anymore. We have found late May and early June and early July to be great times for us to be on the Island due to it being off season.

Hurricane Season begins June 1. Just thought you would want to know since you indicated that you don't want to visit during hurricane season.

Hi iheartsj, thanks for letting me know when hurricane season starts...in the last 15 years all the major hurricanes hitting the Virgin Islands have been during the last few days of August into September and even into October. Hence, we will not visit during that time. We have been visiting since 1985 and we know what we like, someone asked for some insight on the time period and since I have a little knowledge about that time frame, I responded.
