Your best St. John packing tip?

Post by Caw954s »

I will be sure to bring more coffee this time. We ran out quickly when we were there in 2013...all those wonderful mornings sitting outside, drinking coffee, and watching the sun rise. My pound of coffee was gone in no time and was very expensive at the starfish market. Therefore, my tip..bring plenty of your favorite coffee! How about other forumites? Is there an item you can't forget to pack when you're headed to STJ?

If you are checking bags, a few good knives for food prep. The knives in most villas have seen better days.

Single Serve koolaid drink mixies. Add to water, add a little rum. Boom! rum punch. I totally agree on the ziplocks too. Oreo cookies always go in our suitcase.

Sunscreen but NOT the spray on type. Many boat captains will not allow the sprays on their boats because it makes the deck slippery and ruins upholstery. Also, There is nothing worse than sitting down wind of a sprayer when 80 percent of the spray misses the user and ends up in your lungs.

1. Those cheap "emergency rain ponchos." Great for travel days if you get caught in a deluge.
2. Rather than chip clips, just a bunch of clothes pins work well and are great for securing your towel to a beach chair, etc.
3. I second the baggies.
4. An extension cord has come in handy on many occasions.
5. Neat sheet.
6. Dryer sheets. I'd "fluff" beach towels and bath towels in the dryer rather than wash and dry them throughout the week(s).
7. Straws
8. Simple first aid kit with the basics

I know there is more but these just jumped into my mind.

I'm in tune with a lot of the rest - coffee, knife sharpener, ziplocks, suncreen, bugs spray... really cash, credit card, passport, sunglasses and hat are my minimum. Our packing list keeps getting shorter. On the boat I add a rain coat.

3 Rules of thumb;

Don't over pack
Don't over Plan
Don't over play....ok forget # 3

2 other rules of the other thumb;

Bring twice the amount of money
Divide your anticipated clothes by half

1 rule of thumb
for grins...have it all fit into 1 backpack

oops 2 more rules of thumb
enjoy the planning
enjoy the journey

This is a neat sheet:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Neat-Sheet-Gr ... B0007KPBZC
It's a super light weight, thin sheet you can sit on on beaches or even affix to items above you for shade. Packs very, very small because it's made of parachute type fabric. It also sheds sand, so you leave the sand on the beaches.
We have this one from LL Bean, who I prefer because of their return policy (and the color ;):

Two other things we always bring with us are a power strip and a very lightweight fleece blanket for me because I hate AC on sunned skin.

Absolutely Ziplocs (sandwich and gallon) and clips (I just grab a handful of the medium size binder clips from the office!). Also, J&J No More Tears travel size shampoo..... works much better than Sea Drops IMO.
And what not to pack..... (admittedly we are over-packers)

an ink pen for customs
a note pad for list
coffee
clips
zip-locks
lots of swim suits
Even after going for over 10 years I still take too many clothes that I don't wear
and we always have just carry on.
