St. John Arrival & The Gatehouse at Peter Bay (slideshow

Post by LSU Beach Tiger »

May 7th - 14th, 2007 Trip
The Gatehouse at Peter Bay

Arrived in St. Thomas & took a taxi to Red Hook Ferry Dock. Gosh, that taxi driver was super slow ($40)!! Left within 10 minutes to Cruz Bay & waited in front of St. John Spice to be picked up by destination St. John. We then picked up our Jeep Wrangler from St. John Car rental & then followed our host to the villa. Oh, how great it was to be back in St. John. It's was amazing to me how familiar it was to us,even though we hadn't been in 2 1/2 years.

Hubby & I stayed at The Gatehouse at Peter Bay. It is the castle like structure at the entrance to the Peter Bay subdivision. It has a 1 bedroom unit downstairs & another 1 bedroom unit upstairs (like an apartment). We rented the upper unit & were very pleased. The space was just enough for us, and we didn't mind that it didn't have a full kitchen b/c we ate out every time. However, it does have a full size fridge, microwave, & small 2 burner stove. There's also a toaster oven available as well as a grill outside.-we never used.

The villa is pretty well updated & furnished nicely. There is satelitte tv, dvd & cd player, and internet connections (we brought our laptop to keep up with the forum). There are beautiful hardwood floors & ceilings and plenty of doors & windows with glass, screen, and wooden slats that close to kep the bugs out, but good for the breeze. There is a/c in the bedroom which cools the whole unit pretty good.

The best part of the villa is the view. It was so undescribable waking up to such an amazing view every morning. I spent hours on the deck & loved sitting there "watching the boats sail in & out of Cinnamon Bay" as K. Chesney woud sing. The hottub is nice and was great at night to watch the stars, listen to the tree frogs & watch the bats (yes, bats!) fly above our heads.

There was construction to the right of the villa a few ways down, but were never disturbed by noise. I was concerned that we would get a lot of noise from being so close to the road but didn't even notice. we never heard our downstairs neighbors either, except when a family checked in with a kid (I think it was just the excitment of checking in for the 1st time, but that was it).

The road to get to the private Peter Bay Beach is pretty tight & curvy & almost got killed by construction trucks flying up the road, but all & all we finally made it down. The path to the beach is very easy to miss b/c it is a small sign that pops out of nowhere. There's a little hike down to the beach, which was easy. The beach is very secluded and nice for snorkeling & seashell finding. There are also a lot of pelicans that like to fish there, even a dead one in a tree-that was creepy!

All in all I would rent this villa again & highly recommend it to another couple. It would even be good for 1 couple to rent the downstairs & another to rent the upper, that way they will have their own private space, but at the same time can share in the party. Went through Destination St. John & were very please with them as well.

Great report and slide show. I knew that you would love it, it's such a fabulous place! When we were there in December, we actually cooked dinner out on the grill twice and there was a full moon....just too wonderful!!! (...but now the secret is out). Ali~

LSU Beach Tiger, From what you could see, did it look as though the bottom unit would have a good view as well?
