Linne, I'm not sure why Cape Coral is seemingly more depressed than the rest of the U.S., but EVERYTHING is depressed these days. Housing values are way down everywhere, and I believe a lot of builders were in the process of building new homes just as the financial crisis hit, and they lost a lot of money and many new houses stand vacant.
Since we will be retired, we don't have to find employment there, so it won't really affect us as it has others. It's almost impossible to find a job in California these days, and I'm guessing it's the same in South Florida.
