Trip Report, Europe, Day Five PARIS

Post by CBama »

moved photos to Photobucket instead of using TinyPic, and I must have chosen wrong size since my pics are too big....too tired to correct...

Up very early for flight from Luton to Paris, our flight left at 6 am
Another budget tip if you have never been to Europe: You can fly real cheap on Easy Jet. Most of the flights we took were around 30 pounds. Check their website for luggage restrictions. We only had carry on, but carry on is limited to one item…no personal item….so we stuck our purses (or crammed in my case) into our carry on bag.

We also stayed in a very budget hotel close to the airport since we were only here for two days…due to flight schedules and time restrictions (two of the girls were traveling in between Summer and Fall semesters in college, and I only had a certain number of days of vacation remaining ). We had an early flight again so we opted to travel in to Paris each day (about 30 minute train ride) and be close to airport for our flight out.

We used Rick Steves’ website and books for information for the remainder of the trip. I highly recommend both. His information was always accurate and helpful…however there was one situation which did not completely accurately describe the situation…but more on that later.

Our hotel (Premiere Classe Roissy Villepinte Parc Des Expostions) was one train stop out of the airport (two if you started in the first terminal of the airport) then just a walk across the street. The room was tiny, but served our purpose. We chose room for three people which was two twins and a bunk above them. The bathroom was like a cruise ship bathroom. As you can see from the picture, very close quarters, but it was fine for just sleeping and showering

We left our luggage at the hotel next door, and loaded the train for Paris!
We head to Notre Dame first, but the line is very long and in the sun.

McDonalds….great for a drink and restroom break

We bought tickets in advance for the Eiffel Tower. We wanted to be on top at sunset. We waited about twenty minutes in the reserved ticket line, then another 20-30 min to reach elevator to second level. We walked around and took these pics:

We then proceeded to the elevator to reach the top….and the line looked to be around a 1-2 hour wait. At this point we had been up since approximately 3:30 am, and had been touring the city all day, beginning with a hot day and ending in the afternoon with a soaking rain. It had turned cooler and since we were wet and exhausted, we opted to forgo the trip to the summit. I am afraid of heights, so I was scared on level 2, I cannot imagine how terrified I would have been at the top. However, I would have liked to have had the experience.

We still had a long train ride back to the hotel……little did we know that there was maintenance being performed on the subway so we could not embark at the station close to the Eiffel Tower. We did find a bus to take us back to a loading point and finally made it back to rest.

Tomorrow....Versailles

"little did we know that there was maintenance being performed on the subway so we could not embark at the station close to the Eiffel Tower."

Seems like they always have that station shut down. It was out of service both times we visited Paris. Perhaps it is a security thing.
Your last picture from the eiffel tower, did you know that on the island just past the furthest bridge, there is a "miniature" statue of liberty?

No, I did not know about the miniature Statue of Liberty...wish we had known when we were there.

There were several stations not open during our stay...all on our route back to hotel and airport...
