St Croix
St Croix
St John in May will be our first trip to the islands. In looking at things to do....would a trip over to St Croix be something you would all recommend? We will only be there Sunday to Sunday, so if that is something way down the list of things to do, then perhaps we will plan that for....hopefully, a later trip. We already plan on spending a day shopping and dining in St Thomas.

There's plenty to do in STJ for a week. The Trip to STX would involve another trip to STT to connect with either a cape air plane or a sea plane. There is a ferry that operates but it doesn't go everyday, it takes about an hour and half and from what I hear can be a very rough unpleasant crossing. Once there STX is large island which you can't do justice to in just one day. Make STX a destination for another trip. IMHO
If you must do a day trip book a charter or take the ferry (only on select days) and go to Jost Van Dyke for the day (Soggy Dollar, Foxy's, Ivans) before your stop there you can snorkel at the indiams or the caves. The ferry goes to Tortola first I believe to clear customs.
Hope this info helps.

Yes it does. I'll look into the ferry idea you proposed. Thanks so much.

If you only have a week in STJ, I would definitely not plan a daytrip to STX. We spent a week in STX a few years back and loved it. STX needs a week, not a rushed day. There is plenty to do on STJ. We've been there 8 times and still have things we haven't done yet. I wouldn't even waste a day on STT. We used to go to JVD every year, but now find it too expensive, too much time w/the stop in Tortola, and the beaches have become so crowded and so many boats anchored near Soggy Dollar that it is dangerous to swim. So, we are happy with our 10 days in STJ now. Hope you have a wonderful trip. You will get lots of tips from this board.

The ferry is not relaiable and it is not called the barf barge for nothing. It is a rough ride.
It is a long day of traveling for a short time on island.
It will take about an hour to get from STJ to the ferry.
The ferry is another 90 minutes. That is 2 1/2 hours one way, so you will be spending 5 hours to get there and back.
