First time to St John, what an awesome vacation!

Post by fmzip »

Just got back from our first trip to St John. Words can't describe how breath taking this place really is. Pictures just don't do it justice. It something you need to see first hand, sort of like the Grand Canyon.

Our journey began on St Thomas. We rented a jeep at Discount car rental. As soon as we got our luggage, we called them to pick us up. Within 15 minutes, they were there. A short little ride into St Thomas, up and around some very tight roads and down behind some houses we arrived at Discount Car Rental. Let's just say this is NOT Hertz or Budget rental you'd find here in the States. Looks like a few backyard mechanics and a trailer as the rental building. :) All in all, they had us on our way very quickly with a well defined map to Red Hook to pick up the car barge.

Sure was interesting driving on the left again, I did it once in St Marteen. We arrived at Red Hook rather easily and jumped on the car barge. As we depart, I said to my other half, Maybe I should have asked where the barge was going before we boarded??? She laughed and we arrived shortly thereafter in St John to where our villa greeter Nakira was waiting for us. So off we went to our Villa, Bay Rum Breeze.....

The ride was certainly sketchy and a bit intimidating. I am a person who loves to drive cars, has off-roaded in my younger days and I was a little anxious. No guard rails in some steep areas, switchbacks that make you focus on driving like you never had before! And Nakira, I am sure she was driving normal, but I had a hard time keeping pace with her! :)

About twenty minutes later we reach our "driveway" to the villa.....OMG, this was a hill, uneven, steep and a bit daunting but hey if Nakira could do it, I wasn't going to be out down by a lady ;) So we get to the villa and all I could say was WOW! The view, HUGE! the villa was better than the pictures in every way. We were so happy! Since we had our fridge well stocked before our arrival by Viva Vacations, we sat down for a quick dinner, unwound and went to bed early.

The next morning we awoke and decided to spend the day at the villa, relax listen to some music and enjoy the million dollar view from the pool

Later that day, I built up some confidence to take a drive.....We decided to drive to the end of the island down route 10 til we could go no further. Wow were there some steep parts on route 10, lack of guardrails but the views that I could glimpse while driving were pretty spectacular
