Discount Car Rental

Post by Muhaha »

Does anyone have any experience good/bad with Discount on STT? Are their jeeps in decent shape and any issues when picking up?

I have read much about the disadvantages of renting on STT, but we have decided to since we have a late flight on our departure and wanted to explore STT a bit on that last day.

We have rented from Discount for the past 5 years and many of the guests who have rented our villa have also used them. Their fleet is very well maintained and their rates are competitive.

I've rented from both Discount, Dependable and Budget.

Forget Budget for a number of reasons.

I just had to call 2 nights ago for a 10 days rental in early June. I called Dependable, Discount and Amalie car rental. Dependable was the cheapest. They do not let you take a car over to STJ, but you can take a Jeep over. The only thing is, if you break down on STJ, you are responsible for getting it back to STT.

We've had good and bad cars with with both Dependable and Discount, so I just went for the cheapest price.

Good luck!

Discount offers assistance on St. John in the event of a mechanical issue, Dependable does not.

That is very important, IMO. We used discount and our jeep was in good condition. They said they would come to St. John to fix the vehicle if needed--I think they have a mechanic on island that will take care of their customers.

They were prompt picking us up. Also, when we returned the jeep they had someone there to take us to the airport.

The guy wasn't exactly social but he did what he needed to do. I would use them again.

Discount Car Rental

Post by sadams »

We just arrived today! We had reserved with Discount a few months ago. When we got our bags we called and they came with our rental in about 10-15 minutes to the airport. Jakey drove us to the office to sign our paperwork and get a very detailed explanation of everything 'car rental'. We were also given maps and great directions for getting food supplies and gas on our way to Red Hook.
The big surprise was that we had a brand new Jeep Liberty...only driven 199 miles.
Taking the car barge was easy.
It's only day one, but we would highly recommend Discount.

We are also looking at Discount. I have read that it is cheaper to rent on STT, but all the prices I have seen have been more expensive than STJ. Is there a way to get them cheaper, like booking thru a different site or calling?

The quote they gave me was about $30 less per week than the STJ agencies.

Sadams - Thank you for the report, I hope it goes as smoothly for me later this month.

For 2, it's a convenience thing... for 5, it's big savings on taxi and ferry to get to STJ. It's roughly $20 per person to get to STJ via taxi and ferry. The car barge is $30 for car and all passengers. (each way)

We are going with discount next month.
