not to be missed sights in Germany
Headed to Germany to visit family based in Ramstein AFB. Wanted to ask this well travelled group for recommendations of things we should be sure to see while there. The travel books seem a bit overwhelming. I thought I would go straight to all my travel experts here.
I would go to Heidelberg see the old city and castle also if you have time go over to Schwetzingen see castle in town. That’s one good day trip

Heidelberg Events and Festivals in July - Heidelberg, Germany, DE
This would be July 10 can not be missed•Schlossbeleuchtung - the second Saturday in July is also the second 'castle lighting' event of the year, when Heidelberg Castle is lit up so as to appear it is on flames. The show culminates in a 15-minute firework display which is best seen from the 'other' side of the river
2nd good trip drive over to Trier (old Roman town) then drive down Mosel River see castles on the sides of river plus see buy wine from wineries

3rd trip boat ride down Rhine river around Koblenz this will be longer drive
If you have time go to Garmisch (need 3 days min for this trip)

My dad came over from Germany in 1953 and his side of the family still lives there today. When we visited, I never got to do any touristy stuff because we were always with family. Well, we did just in a different part of the country than where you are visiting.
In college, I spent some time with a friend during July just driving around. We went down the Romantische Straße (romatic road) and I remember that being a lot of fun. We spent the night in Rothenburg and visited the medival tourture museum (memorable!)
I do remember lots of festivals at that time of year. Most of that trip was spent stopping any place that looked interesting and staying until we felt the need to move on. (I am not helping you at all....) We spent a lot of time in the greater Garmish area and then moved on to Austria.
If you do make it down to Garmish, take the train to the top of Zugspitze.
Rick Steve's has a good podcast series on Germany.

Some of the suggestions already given are what I would consider. We loved the Romantic Rd and also stayed in Rothenberg and then traveled down to Garmish with a couple of stops in between. Sat in the square in Munich and drank beer and ate brats. Being a history buff the highlight or should I say down light, was a visit to Dachau. Solemn time there but awesome. Guess who else climbed the Zugpitze? Went to the top and then crossed over to Austria for lunch.
Not too sure of the area you will be in but one other highlight was Mad Ludwig's castles and the painted houses of Oberamergau. I'm sure that my spelling is off on some of these places. We loved Germany and have had a lot of laughs thinking about our trips there.

Thank you all for your suggestions. Definately planning on Rothenburg, the Romantic road, and a cruise on the Rhine. Not sure what else yet. We had a foreign exchange student live with us 10 years ago from Switzerland, maybe a visit to his family is in order. Also, we will be doing all our touring with our 1 yr old grandaughter, so this might vary some plans for us. We'll see how she does. But, being a military baby, she's travelled quite alot in her 1 yr.
Although the Rhine has been mentioned. I would drive it from Rudesheim up to Koblentz one side and down the other, or start in Koblentz. A good way of stopping at the Marksburg, a well preserved castle. Also a side trip up the Mosel also to Bernkassel is also a very nice trip for seeing the Mosel Valley.
