Full Moon on Ram Head

Post by Lovermont »

We're tentatively planning to hike out to Ram Head on Monday evening, March 29th to watch the moon rise. This idea was mentioned some time back, and at that time TouristTrapCheryl expressed interest.

If anyone else is on island at the end of the month and wants to join us, please holler. I haven't really formulated much of a plan except that I think a headlamp will be involved. I guess I need to research what time the moon will rise that evening.

Respond here or PM me if you want to join us.

We might go

You need to go early - probably in the 4:30pm range (sunformysoul just did this so check with her) to give yourself time to hike up - watch the sunset on STT and then the moonrise. Headlamps/flashlights are needed just in case it is cloudy.

We are currently under discussion but probably good to go. We will PM you our on island phone numbers and might be able to entice another couple. They've done it before.

This is probably one of the coolest hikes that I have ever done! We did this on our first full day there. Mind you this was on Sunday after checking out Salt Pond and the bay in the morning, Miss Lucy's for brunch, Maho, Woody's, Quiet Mon, God knows what else, Pain Killers at the Beach Bar and a beautiful sunset over Cruz Bay! We skipped the Full Moon Party back at Miss Lucy's, strapped on the headlamps and hiked up the trail. Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! When we reached the top looking out over the moonlit ocean words cannot describe! We were also greeted by the Soldier Crab Brigade?? WTF!!! Why were they all the way up there? It just added to the surrealness of it all! I am jealous. I would do this hike again in a heartbeat! There will be no full moon when we are there in May but a sunrise hike is part of my plan. Happy Hiking!

Thanks IslandTime!
I appoint you the Marketing Director of the March 29th Full Moon Ram Head Hike! If I weren't already planning to do this, I'd certainly want to after reading your post. Sorry you won't be able to join us.

That keeps the 30th open for Miss Lucy's.

Well... I thought since the full moon is actually at 2:28 am on Tuesday, that the right day to do this was on Monday evening. But, what do I know. Do we know for sure that Miss Lucy's has their Full Moon Party scheduled for Tuesday night? I suppose some folks might want to go there after the hike. Either way, I'm pretty flexible.

According to the Moon Tables in the Old Farmer Almanac for zip Code 00830 Mon, March 29th at 7:17pm is the Official Full Moon. March 30 is what they call 100% Moon, 97% on either Sun or Wed.

Moonrise on Tue March 30 is 8:18pm.

So either day is good depending on what time is best and/or weather conditions.

Hmmm... good information. I guess I wasn't thinking that moonrise would be much past sunset. It probably makes sense to set off around 7pm or so.

Thank you for the title! Trust me I wish I could join you. Perhaps a toast of a Pain Killer out of a bota bag or your beverage of choice in absentia is in order! I like your thinking of watching the sunset and the moon rise. I wish you well!
