Question for Carolina locals

Post by shoemak38 »

Question what you know about Coastal Carolina University. I know it's in Conway. My daughter got accepted there (we have until first of May to accept). We plan to drive down the end of March to check out the campus during an open house. She found out about the school via a mailing.

My online research shows that 50% of the student body comes from up my way. They have grown tremendously over the last few years (student body over 8000) catering to Northerners (Over 50% of the student body) desiring a beach location.

Are there any local perceptions about the college? What has me intrigued? it is almost half the cost of the two schools she's looking at in Connecticut, and it's only 3.5K more to in-state New Hampshire tuition.

There's an article in today's NYT about their basketball team...

I don't know anything about it other than where it is: Along 501 on the way into Myrtle Beach. As a parent and former distracted student, I'd cast a wary eye at it simply because of the incredible amount of distraction right down the road.

I had a friend who started at UNC Wilmington and had to transfer to a small school in the middle of nowhere after 2 years of golfing and beaching. I kinda feel CCU could do the same thing to a kid.

It's not shocking to see those statistics though. I'd rather winter in SC than up north.

When my daughter first told me about CCU, I also recommended she look at UNC Wilmington she chose not to.
I should have told you that my daughter’s major is communications. She's graduating from a Catholic high school with a student body of roughly 800, which has a very strong athletic program (she received 10 varsity letters). The two criteria for schools have been near the beach and a strong athletic school spirit. I believe one of her appeals with CCU is we have done two summer vacations at Myrtle Beach and she loves the area. She already knows she does not want to live in New England (hates the cold). Another one of her rationales she could find work for spending money due to the tourist economy.
I have the same perception that CCU may have a strong party school atmosphere. However, the University of New Hampshire has the same perception, which is her state school preference. She'll have a car, and I'm not concerned about her falling prey to the 24/7 party mentality, as her high school has had many the same distractions and she has learned where her priorities in life should be. My concern is more academic is the school known for having a strong academic program by people in the Carolina's.
The other two schools she likes are both private Catholic universities in Southwest Connecticut. However, in a more urban area than she's used to and the beach there is about 20 minute drive. However, you drive from extremely affluent to extreme poverty to extreme affluent on your drive to the beach. This concerns her and for me, the cost will be almost twice in tuition that CCU if the education is the same why not let her follow her dream of staying near a beach in warmer climate than Connecticut.
Thanks for your feedback

Hey Shoe,

Just curious...why wouldn't she take a look at UNC-W?

I think when you come visit you tell her you are not going to come all this way to see just one college. Even if it is too late to get in for this year, it might save you a trip in the future.

Then you start at UNC Wilmington, then go to Coastal and then look at College of Charleston. I think they are all pretty much right off of Route 17.

Just visually I think the cities of Wilmington and Charleston are going to appeal to her more than Conway or Myrtle Beach. And sometimes that kind of thing will make up their minds.

Maybe go home through Columbia and taking a look at USC.

That would be really doable, distance wise. If it is too late to get into the other two schools, she could transfer later if she is dying to go to school near the beach.

Just an idea. Good luck mom. My 12 year old is already dead set on Univeristy of South Carolina because her dad takes her to football games and they are really exciting. I am like, take a look at some NC colleges! Be like your mom, not your dumb dad who bribes you with cotton candy at the football games!

"because Dad asked her to"

Well yeah, I was that way too,... I am just a bit biased though... I do live here and graduated from the Cameron School of Business (rated in the top 10% of Biz Schools in the nation) they should be after all the $$$$ I paid them!..

It's less than a 1/2 mile off US 17 biz, so you could easily swing by... and 2 miles to a beach that does not have 65 mini-golf courses, a hard rock cafe or a strip club! ...a really beautiful, big campus with some pretty highly rated programs...There is a huge amount of school spirit with some top rated sports teams...

AS far as being able to get a P/T job... ILM is not as heavily tourist oriented as MYR....but we do have a historic downtown that is just as pretty as Charleston or Savannah, with a new convention center opening this year that will hopefully add a few $$ to the local economy...the Wilmington area has over 300,000 peeps now and a multitude of restaurants between downtown and the beach that thrive year round...OK I'm done recruting now....but if you happen to swing by for a look see, take the time to go over to Wrightsville Beach...they have managed to maintain the old beach town vibe...Good Luck! PM me if you have any other ?'s

To bring closure to the inquiring minds who want to know. So my daughter did decide on coastal Carolina went down for freshman orientation on July 12th when she came back she informed us that her decision to go to school in South Carolina was wrong. So first thing you have is two parents freaking out trying to figure out what we can do to get her into a school for the fall. Now for the great story UNH told her no problem and she could even get a dorm room. See our kids do learn

Oh wow. What a happy ending, though.

That is great that you have supported her through the crisis. It is tough to make those kind of decisions as a "kid". And this is just another opportunity to learn from a mistake. (Although I am sure it was pretty frustrating for you!)

And great that she realized it now instead of being miserable for a year.
