The Who at the Super Bowl

Post by jmq »

Probably not a big deal to most, but I was talking to my brother the other day about The Who’s appearance at the Super Bowl.

We were both big fans back in the day – he took up playing the bass because of them, and to us, Entwistle’s bass and Keith Moon’s drumming was a HUGE part of their sound.

What we will see on Sunday will be just a shadow of the band we knew so well and were lucky to see perform live back in their heyday. I fear I may have to put on the legendary Live at Leeds album after the game and turn it up to 11 to purge the SB performance from my brain. It also smacks of just another attempt by Daltry and Townshend to cash in.

But, having said that, old fart that I have become, I am thankful it won’t be one of those crazy WTF performances we just saw on the Grammy show.

Edited above from "crazy WTF acts" to "crazy WTF performances" to clarify I knew who they were, but really, were they just trying to out Gaga each other?

Charlie gets mad every time he hears it said that The Who will be playing the SB. It's not The Who he says!
I can't imagine it will be great but as you say at least I will recognize it :)
The Grammy's???? Honestly I got nothing on that! I was so thrilled to see Elton in the opening number - nearly the only person I knew of what I saw! LOL

With all the "Who dat" going on, The Who (real or imagined) is probably pretty fitting.

Grammy's? I thought it was an awesome show (yes, super old fart, too :)

Hey why not "The Who"?

Remember, the old farts became the rage after all the teeny bopper crap that culminated with the nipple "slip" fiasco.

I don't even like Springsteen and he killed it last year!

Husband is a HUGE Pete and Who fan. Even his license says "DA WHO".

He was obsessed the other night with trying to find Pete's email because he wants to be on the field when they plah :o) Believe me, I know he would get on that stage and he's an old fart too.

We've seen them many times. All 4, 3, 2 and Pete and Roger by themselves. Husband even walked himself backstage and shook Entwistle's hand.

Good band.

By the way, I loved Pink's perfermance at the Grammy's...amazing.

Sorry to be negative but does it bother anyone that Pete Townsend was on the British sex offenders list for looking at child porn?

I saw them in Toronto in 82 and while Kenny Jones is an excellent drummer in his own right, he's not Keith Moon. I'm not sure what they would sound like without Boris the Spider on bass.

I think people in general tend to hang on too much. Things change. Sometimes for better, sometimes for worse. It's kinda like the Van Halen/ Van Hagar argument. They're both great in their own way. It's just different. Different doesn't always mean bad....

Anybody got any decent photos from Who concerts they could post? I'll see if I can find a few...

Some of these "old farts" sounded better than I expected...so I try to keep an open mind and see what happens. Prince was really good ,IMO, and I think the other one was Tom Petty...

C'mon what do you really expect from a dude 64 years old...no offence intended to anyone but hey you slow down a bit as you get older....I know.

Live at Leeds, now that is the stuff...

Unfortunately, I don't have any pics from way back. In those days things like film just cut into the beer money!

JMQ those are some awesome pics and I bet some great memories. You saw a little history there!

Thanks. Me and my brother had 15th row seats via radio station lottery. We snuck the camera in pieces, think I shot 400 ASA slide film at ISO 800 or 1200 and had to get it “push processed” (probably only 2 camera geeks that might read this knows what that means). That accounts for the graininess.

I looked it up and the concert date of the first 2 photos is Sept. 10, 1979. The Capitol Theatre is pretty legendary in these parts.

Even found the setlist:
Substitute; I Can't Explain; Baba O'Riley; The Punk And The Godfather; Boris The Spider; Sister Disco; Behind Blue Eyes; Music Must Change; Drowned; Who Are You; 5.15; Pinball Wizard; See Me Feel Me; Trick Of The Light; Long Live Rock; My Generation; Magic Bus; Join Together; Won't Get Fooled Again
Encore: Young Man Blues; The Real Me
They were touring to promote the Who Are You album that was released in '78 thats why there is so much of that stuff in the setlist.

The MSG show was 4-5 days later. My brother snuck a 8mm movie camera into that show, so somewhere we have motion pictures of some of that concert. I’ll have to ask him about that…
