ST. JOHN TRIP – 2009
Waldport, Oregon to St. John
Wednesday, March 25
After months of planning and anticipation, “D (departure) day” has finally arrived. The past couple of years have been difficult ones, and we’ve both been SO looking forward to – and needing – this vacation.
I mopped our way out the door (OK – I’ll admit to a touch of OCD), and we were on the road by 1130. It rained most of the way to Portland, and the traffic was heavy in spots (Easter Break), but we had a good book-on-tape to entertain us. We got settled into our room at the Ramada about 1700, where we’ll be taking advantage of their Park & Fly offer.
Thursday, March 26
Today we flew from Portland to Dallas, Texas. For about 30 minutes before landing at DFW airport, we were treated to an amazing lightning show: Every few seconds, flashes of electricity lit up the inside of big, dark cumulous clouds… like an ethereal fireworks display. It was fascinating, and beautiful!
Arrived at DFW at 2130. Tired from the rigors of flying these days, we were anxious to get to our room at the Ramada and turn in since we had a 0600 flight to catch in the morning. Wellll, our shuttle didn’t arrive until almost an hour after we called for it – and THEN, it broke down on the freeway, and we had to wait for a replacement shuttle to pick us up. (Thought we might have to use our contingency plan here: rpplano had graciously offered to help us if we needed assistance while at DFW. Thanks again Randy.) By the time we got to our room, it was almost 2330, and we had to be up at 0330.
Friday, March 27
It’s a good thing HT thought to set the alarm clock last night, because we didn’t receive our 0330 wakeup call! Evidently we were a couple of minutes late getting out to the shuttle (truly no more than that), and the driver was obviously irritated, and rather rude. Needless to say, we’re not very impressed with the DFW Ramada!
From Dallas we flew to Miami where we had a short layover, so decided to grab a quick lunch: a burger for me, and two hotdogs for HT. (Hotdogs?? Well, that’s what he said he was hungry for... go figure.) Soon after we reached our gate, the plane began boarding. Next stop: The Virgin Islands. We could barely contain our excitement!
From Miami to St. Thomas, the scene through our window was fantastic – with marvelous views of the scintillating turquoise-blue water below. We flew over some islands that were familiar to us: Andros of the Bahamas, Providenciales, and Puerto Rico.
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/36006979@N05/3441693303/" title="Providenciales From Plane by LinwardT, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3312/344 ... 7fcf86.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="Providenciales From Plane"></a>
The flight was approx. 2½ hours, but the time flew by (no pun intended), and by 1400 we had begun our descent to the St. Thomas airstrip.
The minute we stepped through the door of the airplane and began descending the stairs, we knew we were in the tropics. The warm air (80’s), slightly cooled by a gentle breeze, felt wonderful after the long cold winter we’d had. On the way to the baggage carousel, we picked up our free samples of rum – coconut for me, and pineapple for HT. Welcome to the USVI

A short time later, a young man from the Dependable Car Rental agency arrived, drove us to pick up our jeep, and then off we went – driving on the left side of the road. From my passenger seat, the oncoming traffic appeared to be heading right at me. Very unnerving perspective. We stopped by KMART for some provisions, then drove up the hill to Villa Blanca (after a couple of wrong turns).
We loved Villa Blanca at first sight! Nestled on top of Raphune Hill - overlooking the harbor at Charlotte Amalie -the round, green-shuttered villa - surrounded by lush tropical foliage, was captivating.

Our room, with a kitchenette stocked with delicate china, was delightful - the lovely old-fashioned furnishings, charming . That evening we sat out on our private balcony enjoying, first the sunset over the harbor - then the twinkling lights of St. Thomas, as we began to unwind and transition into vacation mode.

I woke up feeling refreshed and eager to start the day. When I announced my intent to get up and take my shower, HT mumbled, “But it’s still dark outside.” I checked his watch on the bedside table, and discovered it was only midnight! (perhaps just a leetle over-anxious to start the day?!?)
Saturday, March 28
Later… we woke to a beautiful morning. Blanca sent warm bagels to our room, which we enjoyed while sitting out on the balcony watching the activity down in the harbor.

After we left the villa, we took a drive up to Magen’s Bay lookout. HT’s already adapted to driving on the left side of the road. Says, being left-handed, it just feels natural to him. I LOVE my new digital camera. It’s SO much fun being able to take all the photos I want without having to worry about the cost of processing!

We shopped for groceries (Ok, and a couple of bottles of rum too) at Cost U Less - an amazing warehouse with everything one could possibly need, and more. HT made friends with the butcher who cut and trimmed some steaks to his specifications (Yeah, he has a touch of OCD too.)
At 1400, we caught the “Roanoke”, a rustic old car-barge that has live palm trees growing in pots on the deck. How cool is that! We sat on benches mounted high on the stern - watching the waves break over the bow, while we chatted with a couple from St. Thomas who have a time-share in Cruz Bay. (Imagine, a ½ hour boat ride for a vacation on “the rock”.) They gave us a road map of St. John, and loaned us their cell phone to call Terry – the manager of Villa Serenity. Next stop Paradise – WHOO HOO!

As the road serpentined along the coastline, we were treated to vistas of beach after, postcard-perfect, beach – AWESOME! HT found it hard to keep his eyes on the road.

We met Terry at Cinnamon Bay, and followed her up to Villa Serenity – which was to be our “home away from home” for the next 10 days.
Up the walk - through the heavy paneled door, flanked by beautiful stained glass windows - into… OH MY - a little bit of heaven! The open living room/kitchen/dining area features comfy wicker furniture with “island” décor. Several fans, hanging from the lofty ceilings, stirred up the cool breeze blowing in through the open sliding glass doors that lead to the wrap-around deck.

Then, of course, there was the VIEW!: St. Thomas to the west, Mary’s Creek to the north, the British Virgin Islands to the northeast, and Leinster and Waterlemon Bays to the east.

HT barbequed prawns for dinner, and we spent the evening on the deck reading a little, but mostly talking excitedly about our anticipated upcoming adventures, and enjoying our first “sips” of vanilla rum – yum!

HT barbequed prawns for dinner, and we spent the evening on the deck reading a little, but mostly talking excitedly about our anticipated upcoming adventures, and enjoying our first “sips” of vanilla rum – yum!

Thank you for sharing your trip with us. LOVED the canopied tree photo.
Your report did a great job capturing that wonderful island-mode! Loved that you woke up (at midnight) and were ready to rumble. You made me feel guilty that we have such a relatively short journey from New England to St. John.
Good for you to go through all that you must go through to end up in "Paradise".
Looking forward to the rest of your report.
Wheels up for us in just 5 more sleeps! Crazy how time flies.
Again, great report & photos!
