Took the advice of my doctor after physicals in my 40s that I could wait til when I hit the big five-o because I was in good health, not overweight and had no family history. Just had the annual PSA a few weeks ago and the number crept up a bit (still below 4) so I may go again in 3 months and get checked by a specialist just to be on safe side.
That said, current research indicates there are limitations to the veracity of the PSA test i.e. some that do have prostate cancer have low levels, some that have high PSA levels do not have cancer, so thats why family history and other indicators are also important.
So, that simple advice holds: ask your doctor.

Yes, like any test there are an expected number of false positive and false negative test results. There are two other indicators that one should also consider. One is the "performance" the man is experiencing either in the restroom or bedroom. A change is a good indication to further investigate. The second is the old fashion "digital" exam. No, that has nothing to do with computers. This is the much joked about, maligned exam a doctor does with a gloved finger. It is probably the most reliable diagnostic tool we men have. One piece of advice. Find a doctor with small hands.
The good news is that prostate cancers are generally slow growing and easy to detect.

Every year...my father had prostate cancer...I ain't taking chances. Also had the butt hose done early...early detection is the best chance to beat cancer.

Bev- Yeah sorry...being a little informal there...colonoscopy. Boy that whole process was a blast, but with 4 cases on cancer in my immediate family...I try to be careful.

After Katie Couric did her colonoscopy on the Today Show, many people have gone out and got checked. In case you didn't know, that isn't the first time the Today Show considered the idea. When Bryant Gumbal was on the show there were lots of people who wanted to shove a camera up his a$$.
As far as the small hands, I traded my Dr. Roger for Dr. Susan.
