Remember when....
Remember when....
I am sitting here at 6:30 in the morning cause I can't sleep. (Long story short, hubby is a pilot and lost part of landing gear and is 2 hours late getting home. Freaked me out getting a phone call at 3 in the morning. Phone calls in the middle of the night are never good news!)
Anyway, I thought since there are so many "seasoned" STJ travellers that we could remember about STJ int he past.
1. Crash Landing restaurant (where Banana Deck is)
2. Before they moved the bouys in at Francis
3. Pussers at Wharfside
4. Right after hurricane Marylin (i think) when the Westin was the Hyatt and the whole resort was closed.
5. (from our friend Diddy who used to live out at Francis) when the seaplanes would occasionally land in Francis Bay

I remember all but number 5. I loved Crash Landing and miss that place and miss some of the other things about how things used to be on STJ.
Do you remember having to go to 3-5 stores to get all the grocery items that you needed? Remember the Marina Market? Remember Don Carlos and Pickles in Coral Bay?
I'm glad that all went OK for your hubby and hope that you catch up on your sleep eventually.

We didn't discover St. John early enough to remember those things; however, we did meet Diddy a few years ago on the beach at Francis. She charmed our kids (and us) with stories of the early days when the beach was "theirs" (her and her husband's), before the road. And we'll never forgot how she said she got her nickname!
We were fascinated that, as an older person, Diddy was still living alone in her house near Francis, walking to the beach and swimming each day. We've always looked for her since that summer when we saw her frequently. She seemed like quite an individual. We wish her well.

Glad to hear you hubby is safe. I remember.
1.uncrowded beaches even in high season
2.Mongoose Deli & Restaurant with the red and white striped canopy, kinda reminded you of a TGI Fridays.
3.Texaco was open
4.Marina Market was open with only 4 parking spots and that section of road was two way.
5. Before water trucks and you really could only flush for #2.
6.Caneel rooms didn't have AC
7.Suzuki Sidekicks & Jeeps were stick shifts.
8. No ferry terminal on either side, just a little wooden booth at the end of the dock.
9. Not needing a reservation for dinner.
10.Chilly Billy's
11.More donkeys and goats than people in Coral Bay.
12.Trunk Bay's snorkel trail was virbrant with life.

I think I remember Pusser's from our first trip.
I do remember going to the Backyard Bar.
Did Woody's have a drive-up window at one time? Hubs and I remember sitting inside at the bar. I have no idea why we sat inside.
Anyway, we remember someone driving up, sticking their bottle coozie and money thru the window, getting their beer and driving off.

Remember when
Reemember all but #5. How about Ciao Mein Restaurant at the Hyatt! I have such a great photo of Crash Landing , with the plane hanging off the top. Just wish I could learn how to scan or upload my old and more recent photos to the computer so that I can post them.

Re: Remember when
Bring them to a CVS or similar, they can show you how to scan on to a disc. That takes care of the scanning part, then you just need to learn how to upload.Knolmom wrote:Reemember all but #5. Hope your recovery is going well.

Thanks so much for your well wishes and helpful hints.
The leg is coming along and the doctors say it has come pretty much as far as it will.
I am pretty satisfied with the use I have--just wish I could walk in the sand without assistance and swim, other than the backstroke, so that I can hope to snorkel again in the future. My gall bladder problems seem like a distant memory.
Going to work on my breaststroke in Florida, starting next week, for two months I hope. maybe I can get together with some computer savy folks who will help me with my technical inadequacies.

When we were on our honeymoon (1st visit) and went to pick up our rental jeep, the guy at Penn's said something like "do whatever you want, just wear your seat belt."cptnkirk wrote:PA Girl Wrote

Love it only on St John hope he was wearing his belt
My husband replied (jokingly) "so it is ok to drink a beer?"
Penn's rental guy "sure mon, no problem, just make sure you have the belt on."
