Ok, I've been pretty quiet through all of this but I just have to comment. I am a LIBERAL, and surprise no one ever gave me anything, except my parents who instilled in me the values of immigrants who survived through the Depression. Know how they did that... well one of those reviled LIBERAL programs known as the WPA. That's right, every day my grandfather who spoke no English and had a 2nd grade education, got up at 3:00AM and rode trains and buses from Brooklyn out to what was then the hinter lands of Queens New York stood knee deep in marsh land and carved out what would become Laguardia airport. He did that for years and for that the government gave him a check.

At 18 my father was drafted, as were millions of his great generation and he served in the Pacific in WWII. In return his government sent him to college, a program I might add which has been severely limited in recent times.

I have worked since I was 14, and paid my way through College and Law School..that's right I'm a liberal NY lawyer... let the generalizations begin!

I have never taken a penny I did not earn. I pay more than my fair share of taxes, I purchased my own home as a single woman 12 years ago after saving... again what a concept... for the down payment for many years. I give back by doing pro bono work and volunteering in my community.. and I venture to say that my story is by no means unique.

So after this rant, the point I'm making is let's stop generalizing about "Libs" and "Right Wingers". It muddles the discourse and distracts from the real issues. We are country at War with an economy that is tanking, and an environment which is crumbling. Decide who you think will best address those issues and vote accordingly!

Ok now back to your regular programing.
Well said. I agree. Too bad "todays" libs don't see it that way. Clinton, Obama, Pelosi come to mind.
Dave Dave Dave... To quote Gov. Palin "there ya go again". More generalizations.. "today's libs". The point I was trying to make is that I AM A TODAY's LIB" We come in all shapes and sizes and if memeory serves at least two of the three you emntioned were the products of single Mom's, not silver spoon in the mouths. Not sure about Pelosi, but I will look that up.

Pelosi had a pretty good upbringing. And married well.

On edit, Obama did okay while living on Hawaii with some nice private school education. And was raised by grand parents. You remember that I'm sure. The grandmother that's now living under the bus with Rev Wright and Father Pfleger.

Your grandfather was a great man. I say that with the utmost respect for the life you have described. I think many of us have similar stories when it comes to grandparents That is why they were truly "The Greatest Generation".

However...Your granfather WORKED for his government check. The program you described allowed him to WORK and provide for his family - and he did so with great dignity.

I can speak for all conservatives when I say those are not the programs we take issue with. No, those would be the endless entitlement programs.

You know, the man you are going to vote for does not embody those values of JFK. The in laws are in town, and I saw a clip of an old JFK speech on TV and I remarked to him, "That is not the same Democratic Party that we see today". You can argue with that all you want, but it's the truth.

It was Kennedy who said that the only way to increase revenues to the federal gvt is to LOWER TAXES.

If Kennedy or Truman were running against McCain this fall - I would vote for them in a heartbeat.

I guarantee you that the people who describe theselves as liberals on this board have never taken 10 minutes to research the trillions of dollars that Obama will spend on entitlements.

That is NOT what your grandfather worked for.

And BTW, my grandfather was a great man as well. He fought in Korea, worked for Electic Boat building submarines, and raised a beautiful family.

When someone would ask him what his heritage was, he would say simply, "I'm American".

I remember standing in his garage at 6 years old, and him explaining to me why it is important never to allow the American Flag to touch the ground.

Today, it is liberals who think we shouldn't say God when our children say the Pledge in school.

Oh Sweet Karma. He was sentenced on the 13th anniversary date of the acquittal in LA.

Actually, he was convicted. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec 5th.

Now I'm on my way to a USC football game where he once excelled. Now disdained.

Hey Soxfan, I'm not sure that Truman or Kennedy would be part of the Democrat party today.

Remember Reagan said it best...."I didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left me" (paraphrased) Many of us can so identify.

So I think it is fair to say, that it's not all about sex in the White House.

And in any case, it's a great day here in Los Angeles. Orenthal Simpson looks like he's going to be looking for his wife's murderer from behind bars. Good job Las Vegas. Something Los Angeles couldn't bring itself to do. And I'm sure the Goldman's are a bit more happy today.
He shouldn't even have been placed in the situation of giving such a deposition. Clinton was Kenneth Starr's white whale. There is no way that the whitewater investigation should have been expanded to the scope that it was. That was the problem.

SoxFan and Dave

It is neither my intention or desire to engage in this tit for tat. My point was simple ( and unfortunately seemingly lost)... generalizations are not helpful. I will leave it at that and wish Sox and his wife best wishes on the birth of the new baby !

WOW! After reading (skimming through) all this, I am SO happy that we cannot vote. Same dilemma I had with Bush and Kerry last time around and same answer: why waste my time, I can't vote anyway.

Ben Franklin said it best: "Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain and most fools do." I see plenty of them on this thread. No personal offense intended... Time to go to the beach.

peace.... bert

I am going to admit upfront that I have not read all of the preceding posts, and I am going to make two observations about Gov. Palin. If someone has posted these same thoughts before I apologize in advance:

1) If the Democrats had dared select a person with the lack of experience, apparent lack of intellect, apparent lack of even a general knowledge of issues related to the national and international arena, and apparent lack of knowledge of even basic philosophical principles of Supreme Court rulings as Gov. Palin, that candidate would have been roundly chastised by the Conservative Right.

2) Despite protests to the contrary, it appeared to me that on Thursday night Gov. Palin had been given a fairly good campaign notebook schooling of the issues which contained little if any substance, but only barebones campaign talking points. When she was asked questions for which she had not been prepared, the response always was, "Well, I want to go back to these taxes." While her showing on Thursday night was much better than the earlier interviews, that was because she was not forced to confront specific questions in this type of "debate" but was only required to deal in generalities.

Anyone who believes Gov. Palin is ready to assume the responsibility of being "one hearbeat away from the Presidency" is deluding themselves. For that reason, I seriously question Sen. McCain's judgment.
How many more days?

Please stop generalizing soxfan  Some of your posts are what I call "narrow mindedness". To judge a group of people with similar interests by the actions of one person within the group is to me "narrow minded".

You keep talking about the past and your gal Sarah remarked the other night against that, remember??? I will give her credit so far as to say she stood up there pretty steady BUT the poor girl spoke like she was reading a book to a group of children, it was pathetic. I bet she is a nice person but to possibly run America, that is a joke!!

Bayer, I totally agree with your last post!

I would've sooo enjoyed a VP debate between Hill and Sarah...now that there would be entertainment

This is from Websters dictionary. BTW notice the usage - "derogatory slang". Just a reminder to all, synonyms for derogatory are; belittling, uncomplimentary, denigrating.

I personally take great offense to this label the Republican party is using. Granted it may be that they just jumped on that before the Democrats, I understand that. But it is an insult to everyone!!! I don't think it is a very intelligent catch phrase.

Sailorgirl - Bravo!

Golly gee, not very nice

Thanks Cass!
