No St. Thomas rental cars allowed on St. John! UPDATE -

[We are currently working on it and both us and all 3 barge companies are still allowing car rentals on board. What they are saying has been addressed in the past and is unconstitutional.

This was recently posted on another forum ------ If the STT car agencies response to the enforcement is considered that it be fought on the Constitutional Law level it may be a very long time until a resolution is established.
Wonder how long it will be until Mario changes his extension #??

Well, I should think that this will all benefit the rental agencies and merchants on St. John. I may be putting my foot in my mouth (as usual), but I, personally, elect to spend a little more and put up with some hassle to support the businesses on the island that is hosting me.

Don't know why you'd have to duck - you have the same right as everyone else to post how you feel on the issue. I can see how it would benefit the car rental agencies on STJ obviously, with some spillover to also help the markets that will pick up some of the business that Cost-U-Less and K-Mart get now, but I would think that other STJ merchants would suffer, particularly during high season, when all of the cars on STJ are rented, and the folks that would otherwise be on island with STT rentals are not there.

I guess in that case it would become "Battle of the Temporary Injunctions", at least until the extendedcourtbattle/islandtime/hellfreezesover continuum is established...

Maybe the owners of all the mega million $$ villas on STJ should just buy a vehicle or 2 for the exclusive use of their rental tenants - easily added to the rate cost after the insurance issue is resolved - and it can become just another discretionary amenity requirement like A/C and swimming pool.
They could have it delivered to the ferry dock in STJ.
Since it would not be a 'rental vehicle' they could even arrange for the car to be transported by car barge and be at the STT airport with a greeter/driver for an even easier STJ luxury villa experience.
It would also free up a number of vehicles in the STJ rental pool for non villa visitors.

If someone is willing to pay for the amenity then I say they should go for it as is their right and choice... but I don't appreciate having my choices seemingly arbitrarily limited.

Dear Budget,
I have a rental for may 6-13th and Im staying on st. john after reading new updated laws for the use of cars registered in st. thomas and driven to st john are you still alowing your cars to go over there and will there be any problems on the ferry? Thank You Steve

Budget STT

This is what I call an example of correct but not complete. The ban was lifted... for 60 days.. which means the rule will not affect your rental occurring within the 60 period.

This whole thing stinks of corruption at the highest levels. We should ask to see bank statements from the director and all legislators involved. This has kick-back written all over it. I am no lawyer but there is no way this is legal or even ethical. This has to violate interstate commerce somehow. Talk about lack of free trade.

As mentioned before somebody does have a dog in this fight!

I travel with 3 small kids . I can tell you this new law will make my trip more difficult.

I can only hope this is abolished.

I guarantee you this would never happen in the states

Contrary to what these political higher ups might think the USVI's are still U.S. Territories and subject to the laws of the U.S. Government. My god this isn't Cuba! Never ceases to amaze me. Probably the same guy responsible for not getting the work done on the National Park Service Dock!
