I was going to say something similar about the smoothie truck. After a full day at Salt Pond snorkeling, hiking, sweating, then driving back all sticky and gross... A smoothie really hits the spot for me.djmom wrote:secret to Skinny legs:
Go there on your "Salt Pond" Days. Nothing will be better than a Skinny Legs burger after Salt Pond and hike to Drunk Bay.
Overrated: The Beach Bar please don't hurt me The whole place smells of stale beer and it's not so clean. Food so-so.
Underrated: Ocean Grill. This is our favorite STJ restaurant and I rarely see anyone else say anything about it.
Overrated: Trunk Bay. When there are so many other beautiful beaches on STJ, why spend money to go to a crowded beach with mediocre snorkeling.
Underrated: Hmmm... before Pond Bay I would have said Chocolate Hole -- quiet beach, fantastic snorkeling -- but now, not so much on the quiet but the snorkeling is still good.

No...it's just that something's gotta give for me and St John. I'll continue to go but I need a good trip.Jo Ann - VA wrote:Wow Pip. Does that mean you won't be going back?
I think 2010 will do it. We'll have Thing 1 with us for the first time and she's gonna want to explore the island with me. If the other adults want to hang at the house; they can. I'll be out and about.
It's funny...I'm kinda jealous of all your trips (everyone). Maybe I need to spend more $$ on lodging and maybe I just need to say "Screw it" and jump in the Jeep and go tearing across the island whenever I want. But, who wants to do that by themselves?
This last trip really soured all of us. It really was a nightmare. It seemed almost amusing at the time, but the months are making it look more and more horrible. I think if I hadn't invested so much of my brain on St John knowledge, I'd consider looking for a new island. But...I can't do it because I know, out there somewhere, is the St John experience I'm looking for. If airfare would allow it, I'd love to go in April; just me, Preggo and Thing 1...because...
(Horrible thing to say) I think if I didn't have our friends with us, I'd enjoy it more. I love their company, but, sometimes, it seems like St John is just a nice place to go for them. They "get it", but not all the way. I need to get back in touch with the island (Lost reference, anyone?) and remember what drove me to all this insanity in the first place.
And...yes...I am bitching about a week on St John. But, that's the 1 week a year when I don't have to work and I don't want to spend it crawling under a house being told to "wiggle da ting" or getting swarmed by termites or having my favorite bar closed.
That's all.

Smoothie stand - - stopped there on our first trip to STJ and couldn't understand what all the hype was. I found it overpriced, under-rummed, and frankly, it smelled bad. My then 8-yr old daughter pulled me aside and said "Mom, it smells like someone got sick behind there." I couldn't disagree with her.
Willie T - I agree with the others, I thought the food was less than mediocre, although, it does present a cool-looking sight as you approach it.
Underrated: STT shopping. Call me crazy, but I LOVE shopping in STT. Yes, it is crowded, but I adore the hustle and bustle and bargains, just as long as I can head back to a quiet and relaxing beach post-shopping.

You really need to ditch the friends and go it alone (except for the family of course). Every time we have taken friends, we come home feeling like we need another trip. It's just not the same. Part of the charm is just limin' and you can't do that when your playing the host.
Spend the $$ and head back ASAP without all the "baggage". I guarantee you'll find your place again

Over-rated: NOTHING....it all just depends on you mood and what your looking for at that moment.
Ex. Skinny's might not be your thing in the middle of the afternoon when your sober, it's hot, and the flies are out but go there with at night with half a buzz on and the music playing, you might just find you love it.
Under-rated: The laid back "just be" feeling of the island.

I'm going to agree with you 100% on this, both your over and under comments. Perfectly stated. I think you "get it" fully.
Thanks.

How about in the middle of the afternoon with half a buzz?Bug wrote: Ex. Skinny's might not be your thing in the middle of the afternoon when your sober, it's hot, and the flies are out but go there with at night with half a buzz on and the music playing, you might just find you love it.

I love it no matter what, but on island I usually always have half a buzz

pip- don't give up on stj. hubby and i realized very quickly that we vaca and relax waaay more when we go it alone.
adding friends & family to the mix= guilt and obligation- these two words always screw up a vacation.
i think you should've jumped in a jeep all by your lonesome and toured the island. sounds like fun to me! i'm assuming that those two nasty word got in the way though.
