I don't reply to the forums, my wife usually does. But this is something that strikes home. My wife and I have been fortunate enough over the years to build a house on St. John. That has brought on many trips. In dealing with contractors, house issues, building problems ect. There were some times where we were left wondering if it was worth it, the hassles, the tears.....and then you look up at the sky....the clouds.....you round the corner on the North shore road, only to see the beautifull blue water down in Hawksnest,....and realize, that yup....it was worth it.
I agree with the smell of the tarmac off the airplane...that warmth hits you...that bottom step on the stairs is still loose and has not been fixed in years....The ride on the ferry. the wind in your face...youre going "home". Jimmy Buffet and Kenny playing on the Ipod at home brings me back everytime. That Dark and Stormy that has almost a little too much Black Strap in it, brings out the pirate in me (in a good Jimmy sort of way)
No shirt, no shoes.....we're chillin once again.
Hmm.....now I gotta go play "Outa Here" by Kenny, and "Island Boy"....I might even have a Dark and Stormy...we have never been to one of the Forum meetings at the Beach Bar, but this next coming Sunday night....we'll be there!!
Absorb it fully....you'll think about it more and more when you get back home,
and already look forward to the next time down.....

You guys are the best. I mean that. I guess it's just hard sometimes to feel good about going somewhere so wonderful when difficult things are going on. It's hard to shift gears and put the bad aside to embrace the good.
You are real pals. I think I might go pull out some stuff and start pre-packing!

Ha! That's funny, I say it (to myself) also when I can't think of anything nice to say to someone that is irritating me!Xislandgirl wrote:I love you Ruth! This will work, Vicki. I say it to myself sometimes at work when I have had enough of work day. The people I work with have no idea what I am talking about....and they stay away from me.StJohnRuth wrote:You must great every person you see (including The Mayor) with the words "mekka lekka hi".
If they don't reply "mekka heiny ho", then you say to yourself "Loser. NO WONDER I am going to St. John on vacation".
I'm pretty sure you can't get fired for this.

Okay, this is pretty corny, but I'm going to share it anyway. I rummaged around this morning to find something I wrote a few years ago on a trip to St. John. It gave me a good reminder of how I feel when I am there. I thought you guys might enjoy it too.
It's on my travel blog, so it's easier to just put the link. At least I think this is the link.

Well, the Guana Cay TR was very interesting and it appeared that, aside from a glich or two, it was a nice visit.
I've gotta tell ya though, the Director's Cut that followed had me in stitches. I typically don't find great humor in other's sufferings, but this was just too much.
Good thing that you travel a lot so you could get back in a groove without waiting a year or so.
St John soon come!

Re: HELP!
I haven't read all of the responses to this thread but, if you can't get excited about a vacation maybe you need to take a step back. I don't mean to be cruel but, there are some of us who are hoping for a trip but are struggling to make it work. Your post hit me hard because we are doing just that.VickiH wrote:Calling on my forum friends. Guys, I have a really weird problem. This is going to be hard to believe but....I can't get in "pre-trip excitement mode" about my upcoming STJ trip. I know this is just inherently WRONG, but it's just not there. I know, I know, what the heck is wrong with me???? Right? Life has just thrown a lot at me lately and I am kind of in the dumps. I just can't seem to get very excited about much. I have even become a lurker on the forum, for pete's sake.
With just over 2 weeks to go, I have to get some enthusiasm going or I won't even have the will to pack. I need help.
Hit me with whatever you have. Your favorite photos, describe your best STJ day, your favorite on-island story, some things I should do when I am there. Let's call it the "Best of St. John."
Help me get in the mood! (minds outta the gutter, men.....)
Pete and I go every spring; it's our Christmas/Birthday/Anniversary/Valentines/Sweetest Day gift to each other each year. A few summers ago, we took our four kids down for a week because we wanted to share the joy of islands with them. They instantly "got it." We took them back, two years later and they still "got it."
We kind of made a promise that we'd do it every two years. But, with the economy as it is and sending our first to college next year and two more the following year, things are suddenly a whole heck of a lot tighter than before. We still have not been able to commit to a trip to the USVI for them, for this summer. They keep asking. We keep putting it off.
If you don't want your vacation, or can't get excited about it, I know of four children who would give anything to take your place.
Sorry if this was snarky. I just can't relate.
