Overrated: Skinny's; Joe's BBQ; Innervisions (if you were watching them anywhere else but on STJ, you would see them for what they are...a not so good reggae band that relies on amp volume to cover their lack of talent); the Lime Inn (except for having the mussels at the back bar)
Underrated: The steak sandwich and Tuna Down Now at the Beach Bar; Sosa's; Mr. and Mrs. Sutton.

I LOVE the Tuna Down Now at The Beach Bar!!!!
I LOVE Island Blues for lunch - much prefer it to Skinny's. Skinny's is more of a novelty thing for us, and they make really good pain killers. One of the reasons I am not a huge fan of Skinny's is because they always seemed rushed when we go in there. In New Orleans, we do everything slow (our own version of island time)...especially eat and enjoy our meals. At Skinny's it can be too rushed for us.
Our last time at Asolare, I would say I have to agree with Flip-Flop 100% - won't go back - there are lots of places to get an awesome view at night.
Rhumb Lines doesn't get enough attention, and we love that restaurant.
Our best "fancy" meal on STJ was at Chateau Bordeaux.
I would take an overrated place on STJ ANYDAY though - just to be there.

Overrated, I agree about Margarita Phil's. We went there once in November 2004 and it was our first restaurant on St John.
The food was very lackluster. The staff was a couple of young guys who had something else they'd rather be doing. Even though it was early and we were not taking a long time, they were actually discussing ways to get us to leave.
Also the Large Margarita was quite a surprise. No warning that it was ridiculously huge. On top of that, it was totally weak. I would think a gallon or so sized drink, at $15 should at least give you a little buzz. Something. Anything.
That was our particular experience there. Enough that we never wanted to go back. (We also laugh at it every time we walk past.)
I also agree we wouldn't want to miss Skinny's on any trip. I was disappointed when they stopped serving their Portabello sandwich. I used to dream about them. The new roof feels a little odd. I liked the old sails. Great painkillers. Efficient service, even if not warm and fuzzy. Every single time we were there, one of the owners, Doug, came by our table to talk to us, really stop and talk, even though I'm sure he did not remember us from previous trips. Unfortunately Doug, as I've heard it said in the islands, is no longer with us in life. He was a kind, good person and we miss him.
As for underrated, I'd say the Gecko Gazebo bar by the Sun Dog Cafe. Looks like a tourist place, drinks like a local's place.
I'd also say Tage is seriously under appreciated. I called from our villa one night to see if they were still serving dinner. They were planning to close, but asked how soon we could come. They stayed open just for the two of us.
The food was phenomenal. One of the best (possibly the best) meals we've ever had anywhere. And everyone who worked there was a pleasure, particularly the host whom may have also been the owner. Very gracious. We'll be back there everytime.

I would concur with this about Tage. LOVED our meal there but heard the chef changed. Not sure how that impacted things. We had 6 chatty adults and I swear when the food came out the table fell completely silent! They had an herbed toasted brie appetizer that was to die for!2catlimit wrote: I'd also say Tage is seriously under appreciated. For me, the most overrated would be Uncle Joe's (we thought the meat was fatty and bad quality, not good). We have amazing bbq in TN, so maybe my expectations were too high!
My most underrated would be Morgan's Mango and Miss Lucy's for dinner (not brunch) - these are the only 2 restaurants we have eaten at on all of our 7 trips to St. John. They have been consistently good. I also think buying your groceries on St. John is underrated. I, like most of you, always brought mine with me. Last trip, I just bought it all there and will NEVER bring stuff with me again. Try buying your groceries on the island - it's not so bad! And it sure beats packing and lugging all that stuff with you.

You must forgive me....I am a bit slow on the uptake sometimes!! Now that I truly understand why she is to be whacked, I not only agree, but will tell you where she will be today so as to help!!!waterguy wrote:Just kidding haven't wacked any one in years
Not only that, but I recommend she be banned from this and any other STJ forum!
The nerve of her! Giving such mis-leading info!!
Salt pond is by far the worst, and most over-rated beach I have ever been to in my entire life! If you go to STJ, make it a point to avoid not only it, but any other beach that may be furthur down the road from it! They are all horrible!!

Underrated - These are just a few
Shipwrecks Landing ~ We love this place! Lunch, Dinner, Drinks, it really doesn't matter why. Shipwrecks features a cool breeze, great food, even greater view and a fun and friendly staff to top it off. It is usually our first stop to eat after we arrive and our last dinner on the Island before we leave. The fish and chips are awesome and the tarter sauce is out of this world! And for you shoppers, the Jolly Dog is right next door;)
Woody's grilled shrimp - I know that the place gets packed and some think it's too crowded but the shrimp are so darn good. We go there for a late lunch and early happy hour. It gets you a good seat then too.
Beach Bar for a late night - I am a very easy going person and would prefer a laid back place. I like a bar stool, a good drink, and some good conversation. They provide all that and the sound of the ocean hitting the shore. A few quick steps and your toes are in the water. HEAVEN!
Overrated - I would have to agree that Skinny Legs wins hands down. I agree that any place in St. John is better than the best place at home and we visit Skinny Legs on each and every trip, but it's definelty not what you would expect listening to the hype. And by-the-way, I refuse to use the bathroom ever since my first trip 7 years ago!!

Underrated: The Balcony. We ate there twice, once for lunch and once for dinner, at sunset. The view is just wonderful. The service is top notch. The waitstaff knows the menu, down to what were the little white bits in the fruit salsa - they were pear. They must have a seperate person who just plates the meals - the presentation was amazing. This was probably our best value meal on the island.
This has been a very interesting thread, here's my two cents:
Skinny Legs - we always liked it in the past, but on our Decemer trip it was not as good as usual. I usually have to have at LEAST 2 consecutive bad experiences before I cross it off my list completely. They could have just been having an off day. But from the grumblings on the forum, I doubt if that's the case.
I give an overrated to:
Joe's BBQ;
The Smoothie Truck. We much prefer the smoothie stand at Wharfside;
Salt Pond - too dry and scrubby for us.
Underrated:
Lime Inn, we have never had a bad dinner there. The staff is consistently friendly and service is good.
Deli Grotto- great baked goods and sandwiches.
All of the north Shore beaches, any day on any of them is perfect.
