Help with movies needed please
I just remembered an old favorite from the 80's. "Switch" with Ellen Barkin. It's about a guy who is a total womanizer who dies and is sent back to Earth as a woman. Ellen Barkin plays the part of him as a woman and she's fantastic! It's a really funny movie. A bit obscure, you may have a hard time finding it, but worth the search!

Man on Wire? That’s the documentary film on the French guy who snuck in and strung a tightrope and walked between the twin towers right? That was well reviewed. Good to know its on video already. I’ll have to check that out (although how painful will it be to see those buildings again? The downtown skyline will NEVER look right to us New Jerseyans)Pete (Mr. Marcia) wrote:We just saw "Man on Wire." Best movie we've seen in a long time.
Also a fan of films by the Coen brothers. Some can be a violent, others wacky, but always with impeccable camera work.
Besides “Fargo” (you betcha!) and their Oscar winning “No Country for Old Men” (worst ending ever?), saw their first one “Blood Simple” and others including “Raising Arizona”, “Miller's Crossing”, “Barton Fink”, “The Big Lebowski” (I don’t get its “cult” status), “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”, and the funny and underrated “The Ladykillers” (Tom Hanks in a wacky role).

Maybe a better Ellen Barkin film is with Pacino in "Sea of Love"California Girl wrote:I just remembered an old favorite from the 80's. "Switch" with Ellen Barkin. Ahhhhh what is it with Robert Downey, Jr. He is so at the top of my list! Something about the tortured soul maybeliamsaunt wrote: I LOVED Ironman, and usually I am not into action films. I AM into Robert Downey, Jr. so that might explain things.

I am not an action flick girl either but I loved Iron Man.
OK, my mention of “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” made me think of George Clooney which made me think of "Three Kings" about soldiers in the first Iraq war and "Out of Sight" (based on an Elmore Leonard novel). Besides being a good caper, it is well known for some sexy but very tastfully done scenes with him and Jennifer Lopez.
Three Kings co-starred Mark Wahlberg who starred in "The Italian Job" which has the best car chase this side of the Borne films.

Ohhh yeahhhh! When I die, I want to come back as Ellen Barkin!jmq wrote:Maybe a better Ellen Barkin film is with Pacino in "Sea of Love"
Has anyone seen "The Adventures Buckaroo Banzai Across The Eight Dimension"? Peter Weller, Ellen Barkin, Jeff Goldblum, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd. Very off-beat, very funny!
Pia-
I didn't read all of the other posts, sorry all. I've been away from the computer over the weekend.
Amy & I recommend "Saving Grace", as well as "Diminished Capacity".
How about "The Four Seasons", with Alan Alda & Carol Burnett?- You might be over that one, being a STJ native, though...
I love it, personally.

Forgive me if I repeat some titles, but I only scanned through the rest of the post.
Anyway, I like:
Memoirs of a Geisha
Dead Poets Society
All three Bourne movies (I'll bet Les would like these)
Office Space (worth repeating, I think)
The Dark Knight
We Are Marshall
Ray
Crash
The Departed (though kind of shoot-'em-up)
Little Miss Sunshine
The Devil Wears Prada
The Notebook
Million Dollar Baby
National Treasure
Man on Fire (or anything Denzel Washington is in, IMO)
Iron Man
Flightplan
Catch Me If You Can
Okay, I'll stop now.

If you see Amelie, you could pair it with Paris,Je Taime for a french night (maybe a good girls night of movie watching),and if you see Once, you could pair it with Station Agent for an independent film kind of night...
Castaway is great for living on an island, it will make you appreciate all that you have on STJ all the more, plus not labeled a chick flick...enjoy. Netflix might be something to consider, as you can stream from your computer more instantly from what I've heard.

I love this thread, thank you everyone.
I think we all should have a movie marathon weekend (OK make that a week with all the wonderful idea's) and we can then all post what we thought - it's the VIOLOT (Virgin Islands On Line Off Topic) Movie Club (oh I feel like Oprah
)
Can we keep it going
Pia
Oh, but have to add if there are anymore movies in the list that are like Saving Private Ryan tell me now - fabulous movie but for me very disturbing I still remember vividly the opening and the knife scene - can't watch it - had flashes of thoses scenes for a long time and they still upsets me - maybe because my Grandfather was in the trenches during WW1

here's a couple I haven't seen mentioned:
Mr. Mom (great one liners - How about a trim on that mustache Ron... 220-221 whatever it takes) - Michael Keaton, Teri Garr
Undercover Blues (just funny) - Dennis Quaid, Kathleen Turner
Romancing the Stone - Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner
Chickie flicks:
Just Like Heaven - Reese Witherspoon

Hey Pia!
I just saw "P.S I love you..." SUCH a great movie...but I think you and your hubby would BOTH enjoy "The Transformers"...I know I know...it sounds cheesy...but its a GREAT movie. Also love "Disturbia..." not overly scary...suspenseful with a really good story line. My husband and I really enjoyed "Tourista"...anyone who travels should definately rent this one...You're not doing too bad if you just saw "The Bucket List..." we haven't seen that one yet...
