I don't have any and have never been a fan of bodyart. And have always voiced my opinion. All 3 of our girls got one or two immediately after turning 18 and hid them from us for a long time!
Now I'm turning 50 and have actually seriously considered it. I'm more afraid of being called a hyprocrate than i am the pain or the dislike! LOL
I'm turning 50 while in the USVI next month...so you never know what i'll come home with, LOL

My wife and I don't have them nor want them. The skin is beautiful the way it is. I can understand people using them to cover up scars. Unfortunately, as people age the ink turns an ugly color. I know many people who got them when they were young and are now older and wish they never had done it. But, I'm sure there are many out there who love 'em. Just our own view. As a guy I also don't find face piercings attractive and never understood nose rings or lip rings. I think pierced ears are fine, I just don't like to see a face marred. I've seen young teens with their face completely tattooed and ruined for life. Mostly drug addicts or occult members go that far, from what I've seen.
Woohoo Greyhoundmom and Elisa!! I got my first tattoo at age 53 too - went with BOTH of my kids. Now my husband - who had 6 years in the Navy - is the only one in the family without a tattoo. It really turns my son's crank when his old Mom talks about getting inked the same time as him! (I just got a call from him this morning to tell me that he's back in the States after being redeployed to Iraq for a second tour - yay!!) My daughter has at least 15 tattoos. She was the first tattooed girl on Survivor (Angie/Palau) and has had several more done since that time. Some of hers are very pretty and some I don't care for at all but they're HER choice not mine and they all have special meaning for her.
Once I turned 50 I decided to pick out something each year to celebrate surviving another year and to keep from getting too old and stodgy in my ways - anything from swimming with dolphins, going to a transvestite show in New Orleans to getting tattooed so far and I'm having a blast. I choose an Art Deco design of a dragon fly. It's on my back where I can't see it unless I want to and it doesn't show unless I want it to. It's probably not something that I would have done in my 20's, but in my 50's I know myself pretty well and figured what the heck, why not? Maybe I'll be the talk of the nursing home someday....LOL!

I have to disagree with you there. I got my first tattoo when I was 21. Just a very small shark on the inside of my right ankle. I still love it and I'm 54. The color has not changed, no dropped into looking like a whaleTropicAtHeart wrote:My wife and I don't have them nor want them. The skin is beautiful the way it is. There's a friends son who is from STT who is back in the states and he's amazing. We're actually going to have a tattoo party because there's so many people that wants his work.
Another thing...when my daughters fiance died, everybody got tattoos in his name. My husband got his name tattooed on his chest. I can't stand looking at it. That was definetly a mistake on his part. It makes me so sad. So the name thing would definetly make me think twice.
I do agree with you on one thing. I can't stand face piercings. My daughter had her eyebrow down twice and both times, her body rejected it and left a scar. I really do think your face should be left alone.

Lindy, you sound like my kind of woman! I have always been pretty darned reserved (product of wild teenaged years), did a complete 360 when my children were growing up and in my 50's wanted to get out of my comfort zone and do something totally out of character. Mine is below a shoulder blade so only I know its there until I get to STJ and then I let that tatt shine! I did it on a dare from 21 year old son who was shocked that I actually got in the chair! Now we can say we have our first tatts together. Husband thought I was nuts but he's fine now. I said I wouldn't do another but lately I've been thinking about a cool octopus with tenacles wrapped around petroglyph. Lindy, I'm thinking that petro tramp stamp might have a buttock involved!!!!

I got my first (and only, so far) tattoo at age 63.... it is a small colorful butterfly on my shoulder in memory of my mother.... both of my daughters have significant body art which my mother always loved... when one of them asked her if she would have ever gotten a tattoo...what would it be ...she replied a butterfly on her shoulder.... so I got mine 3 months after she died........
If there was the right reason and time...I would get another one......

Funny that this topic came back up again. My daughter #2 is a gifted artist and I've been bugging her for a couple of years to design me a hummingbird tattoo that will remind me of my Mom. Mom passed away 5 years ago and loved seeing hummingbirds. My daughter finally drew my design on New Years Eve. I love it and am calling this week to get the tattoo scheduled. It will be on my ankle. I been wanting this for quite some time but I wouldn't get it if it was just some clipart from a book. I want a piece of my child's art that I know I will always admire. Now I just need a bit more placement advice from daughter #1 and it will be input from both of my girls!
I will celebrate my 50th birthday in March right after our "3 chairs on the beach 2010 tour"!

I've been thinking about another one too Greyhoundmom - just haven't figured out which design or which birthday. Who knows, it might have to wait for skydiving, motorcycle lessons or some other repressed desires to be satisfied first. I put off so many things during my childrearing years that I have a lot to pack in the next 20 or 30 years. Hahaha!! I've thought about the petroglyph design but I'd like something with more color. Michigan - that hummingbird design sounds very pretty. You'll have to post a picture after you have it done.
Betsyabel I love the new tat. I have wanted one for awhile but chicken out. I was thinking to incorporate a lizard with a dolphin. Friends just sent a link for an artist that had some pretty cool designs

Maybe I will find my guts in 2010 and get one. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! They do have some great designs (thanks for the link). If you get one on St John, Pat will really make it easy on you & help you with decisions. Of course, any good tattoo artist will do that. I'm sure there are some very cool things you could do with a lizard & dolphin. Good luck on getting the guts! It's really not too bad depending on where you get it.

Yes, I have two of them, both of which I got while down in STT. One is of a butterfly on the left side of my lower abdomen and the other I got just last February. It's a hybiscus and it is on my upper back in the middle near my neck. I just lose all control while down in the islands and I am deathly afraid of needle so go figure...it actually didn't hurt that much.
