We went to Washington last August and really enjoyed our trip. Definitely do the monuments at night...we hired a limo for a few hours in the evening, took some drinks with us, and rode around to see the monuments and the Capitol. Absolutely spectacular at night!! The Lincoln Memorial at night took my breath away.
I was not overly impressed with the spy museum, our kids liked it, but I certainly wouldn't need to go again. We stumbled onto another museum, can't remember the exact name, but it was where all the official portraits of the presidents are hung. What a great find!
We ate dinner at the Matchbox, in Chinatown, which came recommended by someone on the forum. A great place, wonderful steaks as well as tasty pizza (for the kids.) Enjoy!

That would be the Smithsonian Portrait Gallery and American Art - one block from my office. I worked at the Smithsonian in a former life...martini girl wrote:We stumbled onto another museum, can't remember the exact name, but it was where all the official portraits of the presidents are hung. Excellent choice. You won't escape the heat, but there is so much to see and do, you won't get bored. I don't live there, but I've been several times, the last was November 2004.
I also agree that the monuments at night are spectacular. We took one of the trolley bus tours out of Union square and really enjoyed it. Of course, we then revisited our favorites during the day. I am fortunate to not have lost anyone in the Vietnam War, but walking by and watching the friends and family of those lost do etchings off the wall was really very emotional. I remember one gentleman turning to 2 young boys and said - "this was your great uncle". (this was one we did both day and night).
The one thing I do each visit is view the Changing of the Guard at Arlington cemetary and view the Iowa Jima statue (I'm sure these are redoes of childhood memories when visiting with my parents - Dad was a WWII vet).
Take a tour of the White House if you can; also the Capital building.
Have a great trip!

Yeah DC is alot of fun too....good food, good bars, lots of "culture"...I personally get very "reflective" at the Lincoln Memorial and ultimately the Vietnam Wall...http://thewall-usa.com/
I wipe tears awar here each time I go...and I keep going to remind myself to be humble and thankful...
Enjoy!
