Seen a black tip in 3 or 4 ft of water going around Trunk to Peterbay. Scared the crap out of me looked up and there he was. After I composed myself I went searching for him never to be seen again. There is a bay on the south side I think that is shark nursery might want to post a question about it if ya really want to see a shark.

I knew I shouldn't read this thread. Now I am slightly freaked.

While waiting at the ferry dock for our lost luggage in 07, we spoke to a couple staying at Peter Bay. He said he saw a good size shark when snorkeling at Peter Bay but I don’t know which side of the beach.

When on Provo, T & C in 2004, a very large (large enough to cause a huge commotion amongst the marina patrons and fishing boat captains) Bull shark took up residence in the Turtle Creek marina.

During the same trip, we were sitting at a bar and the guy next to us showed us his underwater footage from his dive that very day. He had filmed a large number of sharks swimming above and around him. (not in the marina but a reef a short distance off shore)

I made a comment about how scared I would be to see such a thing and he sort of laughed and said “yeah, for the first time ever, I was scared today.”

My husband wouldn’t snorkel the remainder of the trip and I did so nervously. The reef off of “our” beach was a good ways off shore and I kept looking over my shoulder.

On another note, how many of you see the huge groups of fry or whatever they are called and immediately think they are gonna form shapes like in Finding Nemo??? I always do!

Me, me, me...that is so funny. Everytime I get in the water with those fry I just wait for them to make the "big arrow" and point me in the direction of the turtles!!! I secretly always hope the turtles will give me "fin" too

That looks like the baby black tip that was on Cruz Bay beach last June. There was one at Caneel's main beach at the same time. I got its picture, here:

OK, so, now I have to ask you guys to settle a dispute between John and me. I have a disputed fish photo. One of us thinks it is a shark, the other insists it most defintely is not.

The problem is that the photo is very bad. It was taken on our first trip, in 2003, with one of those disposable underwater film cameras. Eventually, those film negatives got transferred onto a disc and then uploaded to the computer. So, the quality is quite bad. I've tried to photoshop it to make it more clear without success. We have agreed to abide by your opinion in advance. Here it is...is it a shark, or not? Also, if you don't think it is a shark, what kind of fish do you think it is?

Nothingtoloose- I think it was Pbase...sometimes when I'm bored, I'll just search around in Flickr, Pbase, Panaramio, etc....but I usually forget where I've been pretty quickly.

Liamsaunt- That's a tough one, my vote is not a shark.

Seriously, I have such a phobia of sharks that I need to have a couple of stiff drinks to really enjoy a snorkel. I can't stop thinking about the "what if's". I actually can let my imagination get so carried away that I visualize seeing one. I know I have a much better chance of drowning from some health crisis or being run over by a boat than being attacked by a shark. I do love to snorkel, but it does put a damper on my enjoyment. I really wish I could put a proper perspective on it and not be so worried all the time. I don't even like to float on rafts with my feet dangeling in the water, for fear one will come by and bite my foot off. I'm wierd.

I don't know how old you are, but if you were old enough to see "Jaws" when it first came out, like I was, I can totally relate to your fear. Seriously, I saw that movie in a theater and still lifted my feet off the floor just in case.

I may have to do my snorkeling in the villa pool from now on...which, come to think of it could be kind of fun if Marcia is in there

I saw that movie in a drive-in theater in brunswick Maine...after which i had to drive back to my boat (a 12 foot skiff) and make a mile or so crossing in the dark.....to say i was beyond freaked is an understatement....I am seriously shark phobic

Loria - that would have been terrifying! I saw Jaws when I was just a little kid, and I didn't want bubbles in my bathwater for months!

Before my trip to STJ, I was needing a pick-me-up during the long wait. I had heard that the movie "Open Water" was filmed partly somewhere around that area. I rented it. BIG MISTAKE! I thought it was going to be some kind of movie with beautiful shots of the Caribbean, NOPE! Just a bunch of sharks killing helpless people! I should have known better the moment that I saw it was a LionsGate film!

Cass, I hated that movie too! And it is based on a true story, which makes it worse!

There were some St. John shots in it, at least.
