Zouk = French Caribbean. You MUST have at least 3 or 4 in your collection. Our villa dances with Zouk energy.

My choices (in order):
20eme Anniversaire
Dife
Majestic Zouk
Vini pou

Go to Amazon and give a listen. Their sounds always transports me to my *Happy Place*

Yes, all four of the listed albums are Kassav. I would have scheduled a trip to STJ just to party with Kassav - it's gonna be a carnival!!! (They've been on my iTunes all afternoon)

This is a real good list that's being developed. Sometimes these "Caribbean" music lists center around JB and KC. Nice enough guys, but not Caribbean roots. That Club Paradise soundtrack is something that collectors discuss and hunt for. It marked a great period for Jimmy Cliff, but has never been reissued. It's never been put out on digital and it makes the really obsessive collectors crazy trying to gather it up in bits and pieces.

This got me thinking about a few bands that I've liked that I haven't heard for a while. I dug them out and they're as good as ever:

Boukmans Eksperyans from Haiti

Then some African favorites:

Majek Fashek from Nigeria

Alpha Blondy from Ivory Coast

Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe

Thanks Lex. I'll add some my favorites from Africa to the list which includes Thomas Mapfumo. To me this great music and even more so when I'm on an island.

Toumani Diabate - Africa Challenge from Boulevard De L'Independance

Thomas Mapfumo - Kukuvarira Mukati from Rise Up

Oliver Mtukudzi - Raki from Bvuma/Torence

Orchestra Baobab-Utrus Horas from Pirates Choice

Amadou & Mariam - Dogons from Sou ni tile

Toure Kunda - Karadindi from Toubab Bi

Ali Fark Toure - Mali Dje from Niafunke

Lex - I am finding that about the Club Paradise soundtrack. I have been looking for it on cd for like a year now. I could only find one of the tunes on iTunes  but I keep trying to get them to carry it - guess that won't happen.

Someone in Denmark lists it on ebay every once in a while but it goes for like $100+ all of the time and I want it on cd but not that bad. What I need to do is copy my record to cassette and then listen to it in my car that actually (I think) has a cassette player in it.

p.s. the movie was on cable yesterday so I enjoyed the tunes and watched the movie.

thanks for the music ideas

Wow, this post generated alot of good music ideas, thanks for all the responses.

We went from St John to Jamaica, Fr Caribbean, "Latin America", back to St John, then onto a finish in Africa...I've got some work to do to put my "summer island party mix" together...this "party mix" is going to cost me more than I budgeted...and that's ok.

I was thinking that, at some point, we could share some "Island Mixes" via iTunes somehow, I know it can be done but I haven't done it yet...
Cheers!

One final one from my vault:

Bankie Banx from Anguilla

He probably merits a spot on the Caribbean living legend list.
