The Pentax Optiow30 is the camera I'm getting for our May trip. Seems to be more user friendly than the Olympus and it uses an SD card thats a big plus since I already have some gig cards.

Hmm - that is an interesting question - sort of gives me an idea for a small business. I don't think there is a place that rents this kind of stuff - but there should be!
Maybe not renting the case (too many different kinds, too much potential for customer screw ups = ruined cameras and liability for same), but maybe for renting underwater cameras like those in the ads up top, then transfer pics to USB flash drive or CD for customer to take home.

What would folks pay for something like that? Or, is this already available somewhere?

jmq,
That may be the way to go. Just rent out the camera. Although, since you can buy them for so little ($200ish) I would think many people would just buy one. But then again, if you don't feel like making the $200 investment, a $10-15/day $45/week rental fee seems reasonable. Then maybe charge $3-5 for a transfer to CD. Those prices would be my no-brainer limits. Anything higher and I'd have to think about it...the trick is to make people say "Let's do it" without even thinking.

17th - something like that could work, but maybe wouldnt generate enuff net revenue as a stand alone business, but could be a nice side business to some other rental business (like snorkel, etc).

Wow, it sounds like you guys have come up with an awesome idea! You could also sell flash drives for people who don't bring their own. I bought my own underwater case, but if there was a rental service of some sort on the island, I would probably have taken advantage of it. :D

Welcome new guy from a new gal! Isn't it wonderful to come to a forum where people are so kind and willing to help? Thanks for your advice to me about the video camera not facing into the wind. I never would have thought of that, hopefully the videographer already knows that.

What a great anniversary present for your wife. How long do you think you can keep it secret? When do you plan on letting her know?

I enjoy the planning stages of trips and it will help me get through a NY winter. The people who take the time to write trip reports sure deserve a pat on the back-so much helpful info. Happy planning!

cinnyb,
I'm planning on keeping it a secret until we land in St. Thomas, but I have a feeling that might take a pretty mighty effort (blindfolds & ear plugs?). I'll give her some tips on how to pack, but all she knows at this point are the dates we'll be gone. If she really wanted to find out, she could probably root around my computer or my desk a little bit and find major clues. But as far as I know, she's still in the dark.
