I love the Goat Test! It's soooo STJ!!

In terms of the test, I woudl also add:

1. Are you passive/aggressive  ?

2. Will you enjoy yourself if Couple A does not join you at every meal/beach/shop/trip to STT that you wish to make :( ?

3. Will you be honest with yourself and others about what you like/do not like to do and communicate those feelings so as not to cause a feeling of guilt or anxiety in the group  ?

4. Will you ask questions if you are not sure about something instead of being quiet and assuming the worst and going off and crying  ?

I guess I'm alittle jaded from our last few trips, eh :? ?

I think I need a STJ therapy trip....

Great thread! We've been to STJ 4 times, and are working on persuading some friends to go with us. We visit this other couple several times during the year and have travelled with them on vacation, but STJ is obviously different.

We know the wife would really enjoy herself-she's in a high stress job and could do with the down time; it's the husband who's concerning us. He likes his cable (so that's a must) and likes being entertained and "doing things". Previous vacations have been great, but they've never done an island trip so it would be a very different experience. B

From travelling with others you really have to be on the same time frame of day, otherwise you're twiddling your thumbs waiting (so frustrating :x ) and you have to be on the same financial spending level- realizing what things are going to cost ahead of time so you don't worry that couple B is going to be mad about prices, or tipping or whatever. That can be a headache :(

We usually go other places with 2 other couples, and it's nice because we all end up doing some things together and some things apart, or 2 together, whatever. Can't be too uptight is the big thing!

I hope our friends decide to join us; if they do we'll go in Jan/Feb otherwise we'll aim for low season December.

We'll give them the goat test first just to see how it goes

LOVE the goat test! I'm going to give it to my crew on this trip (20 of us total). Kinda too late to tell them they can't come though... heh heh...

My most recent 3 trips to St. John have all been with sizable groups (10, 7 and 9). I pick the house, suggest the flights, schedule the boat trip, rent the cars and decide where we go for dinner. I must say, everyone I have every brought has just followed along like little duckies in a row  Maybe it's all the rum I feed them?? Added to the mix is that every time there have been people staying together that have never even met before!! I am the common thread, as it were. That being said, we always have multiple vehicles and no one is ever pressured if they decide they don't want to do something. Occasionally, someone will get on someone else's nerves, but it passes and we seem to leave closer than when we arrived.

The veteran couple that we traveled with were wonderful and we would gladly travel with them again.

I still love my friends and we will probably stick to weekend trips from now on. They are just different type of travelers.

You either get St John or you dont! It is the same with Maine, you either love it or hate it! Friends that want casinos, outlets, spas, the boardwalk, dont get it but they are still my friends  , I just wont be inviting them to my 2 favorite places

Great musings, great discussion.

I find it interesting that no one else commented on the above quoted portion of XIG's musings.

Because I live here, I meet a lot of people who:
1) Are on vaction and fantasize about moving here.
2) Came here on vacation, fantasized about moving here, then did.
and
3) Used to live here, don't anymore and come back to visit, then want to move back. (Some do, some don't.)

The thing that I found refreshing about this "musing" was that XIG was so honest and so grounded. Believe me, coming back to St. John when you used to live here is a very emotional experience and XIG was (I'm fairly certain) pretty overwhelmed when she got off that ferry.

For me personally, Xislandgirl, I'm glad that you left feeling happy that you came but not sad that this isn't where you live any more. I'm glad you want to come back and I hope Chip is good and hooked and you get to come back often. And get a Mileage Card so you can get free tickets!

Ruth,

I actually had a comment on that portion typed in my reply, but decided against posting it at the time. Maybe in part because I didn't want to risk offending folks such as yourself that do choose to live in "paradise".

I have had several people that haved lived in places most of us equate with vacations, and they have all told me the same thing - part of what makes a place like that special to people is the escape from their everyday lives that it symbolizes, and when you have to incorporate it into your daily life it doesn't have the same appeal.

Of course every one of us would have a different "before" and "after" to our story, as well as different tolerances and things we couldn't or wouldn't want to live without or at least have easy access to.

I'd like to at least be able to start with extended vacations to see if I have "the right stuff". For now, that's still a fantasy for me...
Come see us!

Thanks Ruth.

It was a very hard trip to make. I had so many different feelings coming in on the ferry. I was so very grateful that you were at the dock waiting for me.

When I was having lunch with Jess and Puppy, I was a little "homesick" I really missed hanging out with my girlfriends, but I remembered that I have a wonderful life here.

It was a great trip and I will be back, hopefully soon and just with my husband!

Having lived and worked in a Colorado Vacation Ski town for 2 years, I think I understood where XIG was coming from, and it was great when I did it, but it isnt really where I am at this point in my life. Being one of those people that dream of living 6 months on St John, I dont know if it will ever really happen, but I love fanasizing about it

It's funny, Betty, I was thinking of you when I wrote my earlier post.
In my personal opinion and based on my extensive research(!), your Six-Months-A-Year-Plan is actually very very appealing. It was, in fact, my "Original Plan". It does, however, kind of fly out the window when you decide to own a business. Or two. Please believe me everyone, that will not work.
If you can swing that plan, more power to you!

Well, here's my plan coming to light again. If a bunch of forum people get together and purchase Lizards Landing, we can take turns living there, working there, and running it. 6 months on/6 months off for a total of 20 people - what a plan!!!!! I can run a restaurant (actually owned my own), bartend, and waitress - anyone else want in???

Ruth ~ you will always have a bunch of people you can call to man you store so you can finally get out and enjoy that beautiful Island

So true Ruth.....I have met so many people that said that when I was on island. Now that I am not, people will say 'how could you leave'
My answer is 'a part of me didn't'.
I left for my mom and I know that my heart and soul stayed......STJ has a piece of me that I will never get back.
The people, the pace, the vibe......all of it just enveloped me and made me feel for the first time that my heart and soul met......
I may not get back to STJ as soon as I like, but I really do feel like it is home for me........
