Deltec has built such a superior reputation in its hurricane resistance that a few Insurance Companies are insuring at comparable rates to concrete structures. I know of 3 Deltecs on St Thomas and one in the Bahamas that have all gotten insurance.
We never planned on having a concrete basement, only a concrete pump room and cisterns under the pool and patio. We were going to have a 2 story Newport model, 500 sq ft each floor and a 1500 sq ft one level main house, 3 bedrooms, 2500 sq ft total. When we started excavating, the earth was unbelievably soft for St John, 85% dirt and soft shale rock, we had to keep digging to get to solid ground for footings. That is how we ended up with 5 bedrooms and 4000 sq ft. We are not "Villa" people, more "cottage" people. But we have tons of friends and family that will be saving their miles and pennies to be with us at all holidays, so I don't see any empty bedrooms
I am really not a spokesperson for Deltec, I am just a huge fan of affordable, quality, green construction. I think I mentioned that the owner of a restaurant in St John just built a Deltec also and used our guys to put it up. It is an affordable (for St John) way to live the dream
Because it is so affordable and has such a great reputation of surviving hurricanes and earthquakes, some people are self insuring.
