I think Coral world is the biggest rip off that I've seen down there. heard so much about it and wasn't impressed.

Skinny's was very overrated for me. I grew up on a farm and lived in a third world country so I'm use to foul smells. The smell from Skinny's left me a little on the sick side. It smelled like a septic system gone bad all around the place. The bathroom was the biggest shocker YUCK- the smell!

Skinny legs..over rated...the burgers are mediocre at best..the service was grouchy and slow..Would never go back ...Not exactly underated but I still love Trunk Bay ..grab a frozen drink and move on down the beach..i have never seen it "crowded"..

Have eaten Uncle Joes BBQ for the past 5 or 6 yrs- last year we looked at each other and said " Is it me? Or is this really not that great?" We decided the ribs were really tough...chicken was better. This year we are going to try Candies BBQ first. Maybe we'll have enought time to compare and contrast! Heck...Candie has got to be friendlier...

After reading this thread, I had to jump in.

For OVERRATED I would have to say "Pusser's Rum". When my husband and I went to Pusser's Cay on the New Horizons II day sail, 4 years ago, we tried thier painkillers. I am NOT a fan of Pusser's Rum and much prefer the Cruzan Rum.

For UNDERRATED I would have to say "Jerome's Hot Sauce". I cannot get enough of this stuff!!!

Oh! Speaking of rum...

Underrated: Cruzan Coconut Rum. Other coconut rums (Malibu & Parrot Bay & Island Breeze specifically) don't even come close. Cruzan Coconut is smooth and not too sweet and mixes with lime perfectly.

I think I know what I'm having tonite :). Drunk cooking is fun!

I agree with the Coral Word Facility itself, but Coki is a great beach. Beach chairs, umbrellas, rafts, snorkel equpt, on-beach drink and food service...if you want to spend money on it, you can get it there!! Also, the north end...away from Coral world...has a nice coral wall for snorkeling, and the whole beach itself has some LARGE roaming schools of Tangs and Stg. Majors for the kids to see.

OK I'll chime in on my own thread with a few non-STJ items that exceeded our expectations:
>> dinner at Bonnies on the Beach at the Elysian Resort in St. Thomas just down the road from Secret Harbour. In 05 had great drinks and food with feet in the sand and live steel pan music
>> Friday night BBQ with great live band and mocko jumbies at Leverick Bay in Virgin Gorda

Underwhelming: snorkeling the Caves at Norman Island.

Great thread! I always feel guilty when any part of a vacation is not *JUST RIGHT*. Glad to know I'm not alone.

For the most part, the places that everyone seems to like, we do to...and we probably haven't hit too many of the places that have received poor feedback.

Having said that...

After visiting St. John annually for six years, we had never been to Trunk Bay. We thought that this was going to be in the "over-rated" category. We arrived early - had the beach to ourselves for over an hour. I was overwhelmed. Loved it. We swam laps up and down the beach for 30 minutes - great exercise and absolutely beautiful water. I was surprised how different it was than the other beaches. Terrible snorkeling, but wonderful swimming. We even stayed for most of the morning when the crowds arrived - initially I thought I would leave as soon as the crowds got there.

As far as restaurants, we had really bad service at La Tapa in 2006, so it was over-rated for us, but I haven't ruled out going back again. We had a really bad experience this year at Sweet Plantains (I never did finish my trip report this year...ah well) - we arrived 10-15 early for our 6:00 reservation (who wears a watch in St. John) and the OWNER asked us to leave and come back since they were not open yet. The waitress seated us, with no indication of a problem, the owner then proceeded to yell at her and then come over to our table and advise that we were early. We said would be happy to sit and wait until 6:00 to order, etc. and he basically asked us to leave. So, to us...they are in the over-rated category.

We love Miss Lucy's (it's actually where we headed after the "incident" at Sweet Plantains. We love Skinny Legs, too - even with its warts.

I might put Pastory Gardens in the over-rated category...it's okay, great view at sunset, but just okay food. I always expect more there for some reason.

Laura - I would consider Sweet Plantains over-rated based on your experience as well. Wow, how rude!

Most overrated- Skinny Legs because of the flys not the food. I realize now from these posts that maybe they are always there. Can't stand flys and there were so many. I did wolf down that bleu cheese burger though. I did not use the bathroom or experience that smell some of you are talking about. Service was with the attitude of not giving a darn if you were there or not. I liked the shop too but again service, lady did not even acknowledge me.

Most underrated- We just happened upon Sun Dog Cafe in 2005 on our day trip to St John. MMMMM-Pig Sandwich. Making me drool. Drinks were good too and so was the service.

And- Quiet Mon. We went because we saw that they had internet access. We never did use the internet! Everyone was friendly. We talked with lots of locals and I liked the music on the bartenders IPods. Love all the...ummm...decor and the attitude it exudes.

Oh yeah and Salt Pond is underrated    Sorry Jorge.
When will I see St John again?
