jmq wrote:Jeez - Lex and V, I never heard of most that stuff. I must be getting old or need to listen to some different stations on the sat radio. Here’s another round from me. I tend towards deeper cuts from known and semi-known bands.

Talk About The Passion – R.E.M. (from their first EP)
Crazy Life – Toad the Wet Sprocket
Baby Be Good – The Smithereens (local heros and buddies from my hometown whom I went to school with)
Disconnect/ Waiting for the Dawn – Hanneke Cassel
Vagabond Moon – Willie Nile
Bonus track: The Book I Read – Talking Heads

Quick story on the Talking Heads: Me and my more musically enlightened college roommates eagerly embraced the Heads and other early retro-pop/new wavers that emerged in the mid to late '70s (Blondie, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson. etc.) and harder punk stuff like The Ramones, Dictators, Television, Tuff Darts etc. as welcome refuge from the god-awful disco and post-Yellow Brick Road Elton John music that dominated the charts at that time.
We enjoyed going into the city to see many of these acts at CBGBs. Plus, we were lucky to see the Heads perform all of the tunes from their first album when they played a large room with about 150 folding chairs set up in the Rutgers student center in fall of '77 (admission was $1.50).
You just knew that you just saw something special that you hoped would continue to grow, flourish, and be appreciated by a wider audience, which is what happened. I can still picture David Byrne singing all of the songs while perched on his tippy toes and apologizing that the enthusiastic call for more encores couldn't be met because they "didn't know any more songs". Memorable stuff.
That's a great story, JMQ. A little side note - I was at Dave Matthews at Fenway Park last night, and he covered "Burning Down The House" by the Heads. It was great...And fitting, given the "extracurricular activity" that was taking place at the time in the grand old park! I think I got high just sitting there...Lots of freebies in the air last night.

Thanks Sox. Glad you enjoyed the Heads anecdote. I thought contact highs at concerts were a thing of the past!
Never been a huge fan of that Steely Dan/Michael McDonald or similar jammy/jazzy kind of vibe, and maybe I’ve unfairly painted the DMB with that broad brush. I was recently thinking I should give them a fair shake, and just picturing them doing Burning Down the House reinforces that.
So, what are the Top 5 DMB tunes I should check out?

That's a tough one J - I am not a HUGE Dave fan...I was in college in the mid 90's and it was basically all that was played back then in any dorm you walked into. I've seen him twice now...His shows are pretty laid back...Very different from even a KC show, which for me anyway is constant entertainment. Dave is kind of like, play a 10:00 minute jam piece, smoke a bone...play one of the more well know "commercial" hits...smoke a bone (not me, but you know, the 22 year olds)...smoke a bone, smoke another, then one more. Go home. I'm embellishing a bit - he puts on a good show.

Songs to check...

1. Two Step - try to grab the live version from Red Rocks

2. Say Goodbye - Weekend on the Rocks Live Version is a good one

3. Dancing Nancies - Any Live version

4. Jimi Thing - If you want to get crazy you can grab the one feat. Kool and the Gang (17 minutes long)

5. Grey Street - again, grab a Live version

6. Warehouse

7. So Much To Say - Live version from The Central Park Concert

He's also done a couple of cool covers...You might check out his versions of:

All Along the Watchtower
Time of the Season
Sledgehammer - Live at Mile High Music Fest

Watchtower has almost become his own - no disrespect intended - just very different...Friday night for his encore he did Watchtower and weaved in pieces from Stairway...Never heard that before, but it was pretty cool.

Last night I bought a few Gov't Mule tunes...I had only had "Soulshine" and decided I should look into some of his other stuff....That guy rocks. I got Soulshine from a recommmendation from one of these threads.

<shuffle>

1. "Weeping" - Josh Groban featuring Ladysmith Black Mambazo

2. "Summer of '69" - Bryan Adams (YES!!! love this one)

3. "While You Were Sleeping" - Casting Crowns (part of my contemporary Christian collection)

4. "Long Tall Texan" - Lyle Lovett

5. "Lonestar" - Norah Jones

Wow, that's a pretty broad spectrum of styles, but I guess in a broader picture I have a LOT of music that is centered around the singer and the vocal.

I love DM. Been following him since 1991 when he used to come to our college and play for 50 people at the lake.

His hardcharging stuff gets more coverage so I'll just give you my top mellow tunes:

Sister (rare and hard to find its a bonus track on the Live at Radio City)
Say Goodbye
Crush
Waste
Too High
Out of my hands (love the Radio City live version) - I listened to this on endless replay when I was having a rough pregnancy.

Also, any live version of Gravedigger is cool.

He is an amazing songwriter. His voice is also unlike any other out there, imho.

Found out there is a Dave Matthews Band channel up on Sirius 17 now. I will have to save the names of the tunes I like. It will be interesting to see if they match up with the ones suggested here. They are playing a lot of live stuff.
Some are way too jammy for me, and I couldnt take a steady diet of that, but did hear a few outstanding numbers including some where it sounds like its just him and his guitar. He was on the Today show this morning.
