Algae Plume Reaches Virgin Islands
It seems to be mostly dissipated.
The origin is still mysterious. Several marine biologists are very dubious about the Orinoco theory. We do get algae from the flooding of that river, but:
- It's always in the fall, the rainy season for Venezuela as well as the VI
- It's not green
The wind has been blasting out of the east for many days now,so it's not wind related if it came from the south, as it appears it did.
There is speculation that an undersea eruption could have released the nutrients.
If you Google "ocean algae bloom", you can learn a lot about this increasing phenomena, including (gulp) intentional creation of massive blooms by scientists.
