embarrassed in Illinois
Teresa Rae, I agree with you. I didn't vote for him either. I also didn't vote for O'Bama. That said, I hope and pray that he isn't a crook because he is about to be my president. Although I am a republican, I am an American first and want to support and be proud of our president. I have to admit that it frightens me that he came from IL.
Although I am glad that Blago finally got caught, it still makes me feel sad for our state. Our reputation is obvious by the comments of others that don't even live here. Some people actually believe that we still have gangsters running around. I love Illinois and Chicago. It angers me that these obnoxious, greedy politicians ruin the reputation of the whole state. IMHO, Edgar was the last good gov. we had.

I've been called a lot of things in my life, but this Irish-Polish-Catholic girl hasn't ever been called a Catholic basher. And, I went back and re-read the Wikipedia link here, and it's pretty historically accurate and doesn't bash Catholics. It does say that Chicago's political landscape has been dominated by Irish Catholics, which is true.
As for the other comments directed at me, I think at this point it's become crystal clear that we do not agree politically. You go on your happy way, and I'll go on mine, because I'm not fighting a pointless fight.
I can't wait to tell my mom and my priest that I got called a Catholic basher today.

Absolutely...He is my President as well...which is why I will not jump on the "he must've known" bandwagon yet. Well that and the fact that we live in America, and the whole innocent til guilty thing.mcdomzal wrote: I also didn't vote for O'Bama. That said, I will never treat this president as some on the other side have treated the current president. With utter disrespect and hatred that has rarely been seen.
I'm hoping for the best in Obama. I'm also praying that I was dead wrong. We shall see.

I really do love visiting Chicago. It's a beautiful city (in the summer).
But the history of the State is still there.

An interesting history. Every State has it's own unique history. The last paragraph of this article was interesting as it highlighted more present mafia situations around Chicago.Nothing for anyone to be embarrassed about...just bad government and it can be happin' anywhere.

Been watching some of the coverage of this dirtbag...It just struck me that he should probably hire some protection. Patrick Fitzgerald is a non-partisan pit-bull, and will make this clown sing like a canary. If given the chance to talk or to go to prison, what do you think this guy will choose?
We're not even into chapter 1 yet...This is only the Preface.

I don’t know if Obama did anything illegal or not. If he didn’t, great, but if he did, I hope he is held accountable for it. It would be fantastic if Obama was above this kind of garbage, but he did come out of the Chicago political machine. It’s hard to roll around with the pigs and not get muddy. We’ll see what unfolds...
I will say that I have been impressed with Patrick Fitzgerald before and I continue to be very impressed by him. He’s a no-nonsense straight-shooter and I’m glad to have him on the right side of the law.

"Rod the Idiot" was the exact phrase our niece (who now lives and works in Arlington VA) used. She was born and raised in Chicago, and is an admitted Obamaniac (her word, not mine). She even moved to DC when Obama started his run for the presidency.
I hope there is no connection to Obama partly because I don't want to see all the young people who sacrificed for him disillusioned.
Because I'm old and cynical I expected stuff like this to start coming out. There are alot of unknowns about Obama that the media seem uninterested in uncovering.

As usual, some historical perspective might be useful regarding the assumption of guilt by association with political machines.
Harry Truman couldn’t have been elected county judge and later Senator without the support of the notorious Pendergast political machine in Missouri. Some of the stuff they pulled makes today’s Chicago politics look like Sunday school.
When Truman got to Washington after being elected Senator, he was largely ignored and was actually referred to disdainfully as the "Senator from Pendergast". As such it took him time to actually be taken seriously in national politics.
Just as he was gaining some traction and respect in the Senate, he almost blew his chance for re-election by telling a reporter when learning of Pendergast’s indictment for widespread corruption that “Tom Pendergast has always been my friend, and I don’t desert a sinking ship”.
To no one’s surprise, the two Missouri Democrats who brought about Pendergast’s downfall challenged Truman for his Senate seat in the primary. Truman began his primary fight with no political backing, no money, and two popular reformers as opponents. He traveled the state, making speeches about his record in short, simple language. He won the primary, and despite his "association" with Pendergast, mentioned frequently by his Republican opponent, he won in November.
His re-election was so unexpected that when he returned to the Senate, his colleagues gave him a standing ovation. In his second term, he made a name for himself with the highly effective “Truman Committee” that uncovered defense spending fraud and waste, saving billions of dollars (when billions meant something). The committee also put Truman on the national stage, leading to the Vice Presidency.
Truman shocked many when as Vice President he attended Tom Pendergast’s funeral a few days after being sworn in and a few weeks before Truman succeeded Franklin D. Roosevelt as President. Truman was reportedly the only elected official who attended the funeral. Truman brushed aside the criticism, saying simply, "He was always my friend and I have always been his."
Perhaps the best biography of Truman is David McCullough's book (almost as good as his “John Adams” but better than “1776”). The book relates how Truman overcame the stigma of business failure and debt and acquired a reputation for honesty, reliability and common sense through his deeds, actions, and plain-spokeness, which helped to debunk the accusations that he was a "bellboy" to the Pendergast machine.
Truman's stunning come-from-behind victory in the 1948 election showed how his personal qualities of integrity and straightforwardness overcame efforts to paint him with the guilt by association tag. What a concept.

Like GW Bush, the Truman presidency was dominated by enormously controversial issues: he dropped the atomic bomb on Japan, established anti-Communism as the bedrock of American foreign policy, and sent U.S. troops into the Korean War.
McCullough argues that history has validated most of Truman's war-time and Cold War decisions. It has been widely reported that GWB has drawn parallels from Truman to his own Presidency and hopes for a similar judgment by historians. We shall see.

Right, and it was only a few days ago (maybe Monday) when Axelrod said publicly that Obama had been in contact with Blago about that empty seat...Not at all surprisingly, the next day Axelrod said he was mistakin'...I guess it all depends on what your definition of "is" is.SJfromNJ wrote:Sox - Singing!? If nothing else, this Presidency is going to be highly entertaining - hopefully not at our peril.
