Our take on STJ vs STT
Hooray for STT
I have owned a home in Mafolie for 8 years and love it. It is the perfect combination of seclusion and accessability. We have the best view (over the Harbor)day and night in the Caribbean and the easy access to Mahogany Run, Magens Bay and town. It is private, quiet and yet close to everything. Obviously, a lot of other people love STT also, though they are not well represented on this forum.
I am intrigued by St. Thomas. I think I'd like to spend some time there, so I'd like to hear more about it.
I have to agree with the person who said the spend 51 weeks in hustle and bustle and need one week to get away from it. When I see all the people on STT, it does make me a little nervous. But I've been to South Beach and Myrtle Beach, and the crowd's nothing compared to those places.

STT
Downtown is filled with cars, taxis and people, but as soon as you head uphill, you leave it all behind. The residential areas are quite lush and far from the crowd. The crowd, however, supports restaurants, artists, shops, etc. that would otherwise not exist. The benefit is that those are there for you when you want them. The other thing I like is direct flights from most eastern cities and a quick ride from the airport.
robert, I think you have summed it up quite nicely. You always see all the nagative stuff about crowds and and the traffic. In the ten + years we have been staying on STT we have never found this to be a problem unless of course you put yourself in with the crowds on Cruise Ship mega days downtown. We used to stay at Megans Point Resort and always felt the way you describe as we drove up 35 through Mafolie and "over the hill". STT has it's alure, as does St. John only it has many other options as well. As to the restaurants, I began a list of favorites but found it much simplier to list the not so favorite ones. A much, much shorter list. St. John is just a ferry ride away should you desire a more semi secluded experience.
BOB
As you all know, I love STT. One thing I don't like is getting into the airport and driving through the traffic in town.
There's so much that people who love STJ, don't see in STT. There's incredible views and fantastic beaches.
It was the first place that we really fell in love with and we've traveled alot.

Connie - Here are some things I love about STT:
Taking the "left turn" up Crown Mountain Road and heading around CA using that route
Hearing the wild Atlantic pound in at Caret Bay against some of the most beautiful rock formations I've ever seen
Staying in Caret Bay with the view of Inner and Outer Brass or or on the north side of Peterborg with that great view of Hans Lollick and the sounds of pounding surf
The views from up on the Mahaogany Run Road
Heading to the North Drop for dinner (is it still open??); then to Hull Bay Hideaway for some live music
Doing the night snorkel with Homer at Hull Bay
Spending the day on Lindqvist Beach (I know it's called Smith Bay Beach now but it'll always be Lindqvist to us)
Having a few Red Stripes at Fungi's with my feet in the water
Having lunch at Indigo's, followed by a "loaded" milkshake at the Udder Delight
Having dinner at The Blue Moon Cafe and some after dinner fun in Red Hook
Spending the day on Sapphire Beach, snorkeling, playing beach volleyball, watching the windsurfers
We're really enjoying STX these days but we will definitely get back to STT and to STJ.

Oh yeah Margy...Crown Mountain Road. I remember the first time our friends traveled with us and our greeter took us up that road. My friends couldn't believe it! That's a fast initiation into the twists and turns of STT.
We personally like to stay near Red Hook for the convenience of the small amount of stores and restaurants availabe, and of course the ferry.
I'm always saying how beautiful driving up to Mountaintop is. The lushness of the grenery is incredible. For some reason, we always go up there at least once everytime we travel to STT.
I also found that Paradise Point has the most amazing sunsets I've ever see. Couple that with the cruise ships lit up and the seaplanes landing, and you have a view that can compete with any other.
I don't know about that night snorkel though, that idea kind of creeps me out...scarey!
The one thing that really surprised me about STJ was the dumpsters. STT has them, but I didn't realize that STJ would too. I guess it would really difficult to collect trash like they do around here.
