oh you guys are making me hungry for their mussels! they are fantastic (and i normally don't eat mussels!). also love their frozen key lime pie - yum!

I don't want to be allergic to mussels, because I love them!
Several years ago, they opened a new McCormick & Schmick's by my office, and I got invited to a sneak preview party. I had mussels and was violently ill through the night and into the next day. I chalked it up to it being a new restaurant and having lots of booze and free seafood, but secretly I wondered if it was the mussels.
I avoided mussels for years, but earlier this year I had to have that pasta dish with all the seafood at Carabba's. The next morning about 5:30 a.m. I woke up and I was dizzy. I had awful vertigo that lasted several days. I figured it might be food poisoning, but I thought it was odd that it was mussels again.
Maybe I should just assume that my body does not like mussels and stick with shrimp and lobster, but those mussels sound super-delicious!

Lulu - if you think it's the mussels that make you sick, I'd for sure give them another try BEFORE St. John. If they make you sick, then you know, and maybe you lose a day off work. If you get sick on STJ, then you lose a lot more than a day. A lost day on STJ is one you'll regret.

I think I will probably just avoid the mussels until I figure it all out, even though mussels are so delicious.
I looked up a mussel allergy online, and I don't ever get hives or have breathing problems, which most people do with seafood allergies. Plus, it said if you are allergic to mussels, then you should also be allergic to clams, oysters and scallops, and I'm not allergic to any of those things.
But maybe my body doesn't like mussels. I guess I'll just settle for a lobster instead.

Lulu---I feel your pain. I have allergies to certain shellfish too---clams and scallops in particular. My Dad has the same allergies. Strangely, I'm OK with oysters (shrimp and lobster are fine too). I haven't eaten mussels in about 20 years because I just don't want to risk getting violently ill---so I'm not sure I'm allergic to mussels---but they seem similar enough to clams I've never wanted to risk it. I figure the best part is sopping up the garlic butter with french bread anyway, so maybe you can just get shrimp in garlic butter.

And you just get violently ill? Because I've never had a hive or anything, but when I eat mussels, I am down for the count for several days.
