We have verizon and it can be spotty, but their fees have gone up in one year. We were originally charged 69/minute roaming, this year it's 1.99/minute roaming. I went on their website just to check this out. Even their global phones are 1.99 minute.
We brought a sprint card last time and it was perfect. We only used it at the villa to call home, but it was minute for minute coverage...no crazy fees.
Still took my cell phone in case of emergencies.

"Paradise...it's a state of mine"
We have Verizon and the Virgin Islands are covered on our plan. Service can be spotty but at the North Shore Beaches you might roam to a tower on the B.V.I. which has consistantly happened to us. We have called Verizon when the bill arrives and the have taken the roaming charges off of the bill everytime.
I actually just spoke with a Verizon Wireless rep this morning regarding my phone for next month's trip to St. John. The rep suggested that being I have 500 min a month for texting (and barely ever use them up) it would be more cost affective to text back home vs. calling back home. The cost to call from the USVI to the states is $1.99 a minute. Ironically if you were to call from the states to the US Virgin Islands, its considered domestic. Go figure!
That's the opposite of T-mobile. They charge me to call USVI, but do not charge me to use my phone there. Fine by me, I guess, but they used to not charge for anything.
Check and make sure that there are no fees associated with your texts. The girl going with me who called said it was 5 cents to send them and 50 cents to receive them or something like that.

Just got back from a week in STX. We bought an AT&T GoPhone (RadioShack)for $15, and put on $25 worth of minutes. Got a $5 instant rebate and 2 days later they added another $10 worth of minutes. The best part? A 15 cents per minute flat rate - no roaming, no long distance. And it worked everywhere on the island. Actually, it still works back home, here in Mass!! We will be doing that from now on...
I can vouch for AT&T they get good reception all over the Island. Our last trip we got a few calls from furumites that were all over the island while we were out by Coral Bay. Even talked to boatsrus while taking a hike out to Rams Head. That AT&T go phone sounds like a good cheap way to go for good reception if ya gotta have it.
