Travelers Checks
There is a pretty long thread on this over at TTOL with over 2300 views.

Consensus seems to be that the merchants may be more amenable to accepting them nowadays considering the higher fees that the CC companies are charging them, and, that if you do get them, be considerate when using them, i.e. dont cash in a $100 travelers check for a bag of ice.
Travelers checks still fee free if you are a AAA member?

I used mostly my card last year, and I think about $400 in cash. I guess I will just plan to use the card everywhere I can and take some cash. I don't like to carry cash. It's not particularly safe, and if something did happen to it, you can't replace it. (Well, you can go get more -- if you have it -- but that's not really replacing it.)
There is also an ATM located at Caneel Bay (at the gift shop, around the right side of the building as you are looking at it). I believe there's one at Love City Mini Mart also (not 100% sure on that one). For some reason the ScotiaBank machine outside Starfish started accepting our atm cards last year--they never worked in it on prior trips.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
Augie makes a good point as well- I also generally tip in cash.
Though it really annoys me when a server demands it. In which case my usually generous 20% or more might end up being ZERO if they are an ass about it. But if they're polite and don't act like they expect it I absolutely tip in cash.

*Another fine scatterbrained production
I generally tip for things that most people don't. Why? Because if you tip someone well; they will take care of you. It wasn't until the Valentine's Day that I delivered flowers for a family friend's flower shop that I realized I am the only person in the world who tips.
That being said, if you remind me that I need to tip you, tell me how to tip you or tell me how much you expect to be tipped, I will not tip you at all. Tips are something extra that is given for a service rendered and they are entirely at the discretion of the individual receiving the service.
One time I needed to valet my car because I was in a rush. I asked the valet how much it was and he says, "It's complimentary, except you have to give us a tip."
And I said, "That's not exactly how complimentary works," and I didn't think twice when I realized I'd accidentally used my tip money.

The nail salon that I go to asks you to pay your tip separately if you are going to charge your service. I've never used traveler's checks on STJ. One thing that I found handy was to open a bank account at one of the banks. Put in a certain amount of money and then you can make out a check and deposit it and then withdraw it against that account all at one time. This way you can always get cash. Lots of times the ATM's on island don't work. It's a good idea if you are a frequent visitor. You have to keep using your account, if not they do deduct from the amount you have in your savings account each month. I make sure that I keep the account going.
P.S. I've been back from STJ for awhile now and can't disable my ticker.
