I’m not rich nor am I friends with the President but his tax cuts sure made it a heck of a lot easier for us to be able to afford vacationing on STJ these past 6 years :)

Back to mammalian donkeys, we saw about a dozen of them including several babies when we were hiking to and from Waterlemon in late June. We also saw lots of them on the East End...lots of deer out that way too.

We see donkeys in Coral Bay. We saw them everyday all day at the intersection (where all the fun signs are) as well as near Calabash Boom.

I think you will be equally amazed at the amount of (herds of) goats and geep (goat/sheep mixes).

Ok, I don't know if they are actually goat/sheep mixes  but they're funny looking whatever they are.

If you go to Miss Lucy's for a meal, lunch or dinner, you may be lucky enough to dine with her goats and chickens. Quite fun! That is unless you're uptight about barn animals around your food, or jumping on the table, or sitting above your head in the seagrape tree  ... to each his own!

I agree with the previous poster who said don't feed the donkeys. Wild animals should always remain wild and at arm's length. I'd hate to revisit STJ in a few years and have donkeys being pushy and agressive for a handout while I'm trying to enjoy the beach and/or a walk. Without that fear of people, donkeys could be quite dangerous for everyone during rut (breeding season).

Donkeys are quite common and usually don't require much effort to locate. You had an unusual experience.

I certainly agree about neither feeding nor petting donkeys. They're not tame, they're just not afraid. And some have become aggressive and, as Carib Soul recalls, some were actually destroyed some years back when they became too much of a nuisance. They're usually easy enough to avoid. One situation that can be a little tricky is if you come upon donkeys while hiking. Some trails are pretty narrow. It can be confusing to guess how to react. We usually just cut up into the brush a little, giving the donkeys a wide berth. No bad experiences so far.

Tortola - Since when did you become the governor of this forum? This is the second post you've made (out of a total of 5) that is negative and rather "pushy" sounding. If you don't like the way this forum works, then there are plenty of others to visit.

Papabou - Tortola is a rabble rouser. I seemed to remember other negatives from this person, so I looked it up. Tortola is one of the people who posted last year on a thread about all the forum members being alcoholics and obessed with booze. Seems to me that this person is just out there looking to stir things up, with no real informative or positive input.

I'll take that a step furthur and state that all these denials and excuses posted leads me to believe that many of the members here may actually have a problem. I drink here because it is cheap, or I drink here because I can relax are all excuses. Just look at the first post about koozies or whatever....it's not about you drinking on our beaches...god forbid your Buffett Cola gets warm!

Ahhhhhh... Hey good people, I only wanted to make a joke about laying on the beach w/ the donkey/democrat. It seems politics can be a sensative issue. I like the fact that most of you are very passionate about this, but maybe it's best if discussed at a different forum.

P.s Don't forget to vote reguardless on who you vote for!

Oh yeah, I wanted to thank everyone who responded about where to find donkeys. I kind of feel silly that I didn't see any last year. It seems like they are every where. I had no ideo that there are deer there too (bonus).

Until this year my husband didn't even believe there were deer on STJ. We hadn't seen any deer during our first 5 trips and then this year we saw deer every where. Lots out on the east end but we saw some in Fish Bay by our villa too and my husband saw a big buck when he was hiking the Reef Bay Trail. The deer are scared of people, unlike the donkeys.

I have seen deer behind the parking lot at Waterlemon and at Little Lameshur when we were about to snorkel and then again past Big Lameshur when we were heading out.

We stayed real still and quiet in both instances and they did not run off. We just stood there watching them till we decided it was time to snorkel.

As for aggressive donkeys, last year when we were returning from Waterlemon we heard a bunch of people up in the woods by Leinster. Cat went to see what they were doing and all of the sudden everyone came running out screaming. Cat said the donkeys must have gotten sick of being fooled with and started charging the people.

My favorite thing to see though are the jackalopes.

Hey Heckstar, I'm with you, I haven't seen a donkey or a deer on STJ, and I'm a country girl! Don't they gravitate towards country girls??

We are staying on the Coral Bay side of the island on our next trip, so I have much hope of having one in my backyard!!

And I promise.... I won't feed them! Only the banaquits!

Remember....you don't have to be hiking that trail, or on that empty beach.

This fella was partying up hard at the baseball diamond across from Mongoose Junction one night in Nov last year. Even the cab drivers were amazed.
