Great sauteed extra-fresh fish. Saute' is a great test of a kitchen, and a lot of the restaurants on St. John that people rave about fail this test.

And.... heavy pours on the cocktails.

Great drinks and I'm pretty sure they use fresh fruit in frozen drinks and the daily specials are awesome and presented incredibly well!! I had a mussels/pasta dish once (can't remember exact name) and I still crave it, excellent! My ONLY complaint is their seating is not too comfy!!

Hi

Been to Shipwreck Landing a number of times - it’s only so-so for food - not in the same league as Miss Lucy’s (ah that callaloo!) or even the late lamented Island Blues. There is one thing that sticks in my mind though and that’s the dishes with sugar and the countless banaquits flitting from bowl to bowl. They are the best. entertainment ever. Drinks were just fine though.

Nothing will ever match people watching at Island Blues. A quote from the ‘06 log :
“This time I had a more modest dish of nachos and Chris had an excellent blackened mahi-mahi sandwich plus drinks. Love that lime ‘n coconut! We were treated to a Coast Guard boarding of a yellow boat that had rafted off another boat in the harbor. The coast guard was later joined by a DP&NR (Department of Power and Natural Resources) cutter, apparently also with police powers. The yellow boat was un-rafted and moved farther out into the bay. At least one person was taken by the Coast Guard to the dock at Skinny Legs who didn’t come back on the return trip. The whole thing was watched by several sets of binoculars at Island Blues, obviously a favorite spot for the locals - plenty of beards!”

I agree with all of the previous posts. I can also vouch for the fish of the day sandwhich...always delicious AND it's the only place I have been able to get Valley Doll's Hot Sauce which is AWESOME on the fish sandwhich!

I keep reading trip reports thinking that I have to go to this place on our trip in November, and this post has cemented that idea in my brain. I want to spend more time out in Coral Bay and we're staying out there this time, and I see some fish and chips in my future.

Like I said in my response on this post: Shipwreck's "canned menu" i.e. fish&chips fritters, blackened shrimp, etc. is pretty good. IMHO the daily specials have been great for years. As to comparing it to Ms. Lucy's, they're two totally different types of places. Guy, the chef, and now part owner of Lucy's, does a great job of serving dishes like pidgeon peas and rice, and callaloo,etc, but they encourage more of a mostly touristy clientele then Shipwreck does. Lucy's Full Moon parties would be a disappointment for many folks looking for a rocking island experience. Lets just say that it ain't Bomba's, and that they are very civilized and family oriented, as are the Sunday Jazz brunches. As for local flavor, from ex-pats to multi- generational West Indians, I think Shipwreck is pretty hard to beat.

We went to Shipwreck Landing a couple weeks ago and it was decent. I ordered the ribeye and it had a strange sauce on it…kind of BBQish…I’m a meat purist so it was not my cup of tea at all. If I went back I’d order it again but without the funky sauce. My rum punch was STRONG and I mean STRONG. I could not drink it. Even after I had them add more juice to it I could still barely get it down. The atmosphere is very “Coral Bay” in nature. I took my meat scraps to the cats out back and they were happy :)
