House prices in USA, the gasolin price

Last time I filled up, I paid 3.08 a gallon. I drive a Jeep Liberty as we need 4 wheel drive where I live here in Utah. I have to fill the little gas hog once every 1 1/2 - 2 weeks. I only live about 3 miles from my office.
I have read that the declining housing market that is affecting most areas has not really hit us here. There are a lot of town homes (two story condo types) going up around here and some of the starting prices on these are at just about the same level as the base price was on our 4000 sq. ft home we bought 3 1/2 years ago. My sister live in one of these. It's cute but tiny! I'd guess around 1200 sq. ft!!!

Hi again!
I enjoy getting more knowledge about USA through this forum. It’s much better than to read information in a book. Thank you for taking your time.
Soxfan and Teresa,
I am aware that I cannot compare our little country with USA, and I also know that public transport
not always is a possibility. Even here in DK some people need a car to come to work.
But I also think that it’s possible to change your habits. You can buy a more economic car too example a diesel car with a filter or one of these new hybrid cars, or perhaps you can drive together with other to work. It’s also possible to save electricity, if you really want to. I don’t know how it is in USA, but here in DK you now can buy white goods with much lower energy consumption than before. The price is a little higher, but due to the high price for electricity, you still save money in the long run. So my point is that the economy can get you to do things that are sensible.

I’m not sure if I understand you right. Are the house prices higher in the “Fly Over Country” than in NY?
Chrisn, 1200 sq ft is not considered as a tiny home here in DK, but I have understood now that your houses normally are bigger.

Hi Linne
I think what Soxfan is trying to say is that alot of people that don't live hear and some that do think the USA is New York city or Chicago and LA. when When they think of us. They don't think of the rual areas that there are alot more of then the citys. I live in the third largest city in Wisconsin and it is only 110,000 in population. Just to go from one border to the other in our state is 8 hrs At 90 kph I did the math for you
. Yes we have to change our ways of doing some things that is why I bought a truck that burns ethenol. We also have the programs for better energy things instead of white we call them green. I got a tax rebate for putting in a better central air conditioner last year. It is hard to compare our life styles because of the distances between things here compared to there. I have to deal with this coaching I talk with coaches from europe that have a hard time understanding I have kids on our team that might only get to compete with one another once a year because they might be 4 or 5 days drive apart. I love to tour europe just can't afford to right now with the dollar. So come on over and enjoy our country it is your turn after all the years of us having cheap travel over there and try to vist the fly over country we would be happy to have you.

Linne...I'll play the "angry, ignorant American" here...I guess an issue I have is when people start telling me when and how I should adjust my lifestyle. I'm not pinpointing you here, just in a general sense.linne wrote:But I also think that it’s possible to change your habits. I posted yesterday a reference to an article in the Boston Globe last week http://www.boston.com/news/health/artic ... cury_risk/
The gist of this article is that studies have shown that the "high-efficiency" light bulbs emit a dangerous level of mercury when broken. They make a recommendation that if you have small children or are pregnant, maybe you shouldn't have these bulbs. These things are flying off the shelves here because of Al Gore's Powerpoint presentation...Yes, the risk might be slight, but there is no risk with the "old fashioned" incandescent bulbs. Yet there is pressure with elites and media types to outfit your home with these things. No thanks.
Please don't take my view here as though I don't care for the environment...I care deeply. I'm just not going to put my 2 year old son and expecting wife in harms way.
Oh, and I drive a hybrid (thanks to the what some would call "evil" big-pharma company I work for)...It only gets 32-35 miles per gallon on the highway. Good, but not great.

Hey there Linne you've made some excellent points that the whole world population should consider. I realize that a good portion of our neighboring countries look upon the USA as the land where bigger is better...cars, homes, meal portions, salaries, etc I never understood the people that drive around HUGE SUV's like Hummers and such. Totally ridiculous! To some people bigger=better status I guess??
We should all do our part however it may be...on a smaller scale or grand. Every lil' bit I would hope will count.
Hey RedSox fan, Woohoo GO SOX! Soon come
Anyway, I don't understand the statement you made, "This country is actually run by the people who live in what some call "Fly Over Country"...huh?
Enjoy,
Kathy

1. Ethanol production has moved many wheat farmers to plant corn, now leading to the higher cost of wheat. Pizza's are going up in price.
2. Whoever mentioned the bulb situation is right on. Since you will not be able to dispose of these bulbs in the usual manner because of their mercury content, you will have to drive to the collection centers. Spending more on gasoline.
3. I'm in SoCal, but I understand this is the coldest winter in many, many years. Remember 1986 and the threat of a global freeze.
4. No new refineries have been built in the last 25 years.
5. We're not allowed to drill in the gulf, in ANWR or off the coast of California.
6. Anti nuke folks won't allow the building of nuclear power plants, even though the much more liberal Frenchies get over 50 pct of their power from nuke plants.

Dear Linne,
I was shocked to hear that a Prius costs $80K in Europe. We bought ours for $26K with all options and we got a $3150 tax rebate for buying it. Gasoline is about $3.14 a gallon here but is expected to go down in price soon.
Yes, our house is the largest we have ever owned at 3400 sq. ft., but when we bought it in 2004 there was a possibility that our aged parents would live with us.
So far, that has not happened. We are retirees and eventually we will move into a condo or apartment.
Our little town will recycle any type of trash that you sort out into containers. We also use the compact spiral bulbs, but did not know until recently that they are dangerous for children. Don't have any small children around though.
We keep the Toyota minivan because it is so much easier access in/out for our elderly parents and disabled older siblings. We make trips to Springfield MO
(90 miles away)about once a month taking them for advanced medical care.
BTW Springfield is Brad Pitt's home town-his mother and siblings still live there. Yes, Brad graduated from Kickapoo High School and went to Univ of MO.
He seems like a nice person moving to and helping rebuild New Orleans.

Thanks for the vote of confidence. I think MO is a bellwether state (meaning a sheep that wears a bell that other sheep follow). It seems that in elections the results in MO tend to predict the national outcome. Nice idea to run the country though.

Verjoy - The price for a Prius (or any car) differs from country to country in Europe. Denmark and Norway are two countries with very high prices on cars. In Sweden a Prius cost about 40K. I just looked it up.
I know about the rural areas in the US. My first trip ever to US was 1981 and we were driving from Atlanta all the way to San Fransisco (via Dallas, Grand Canyon, Las Vegas) then down to LA and back east again along the south border, passing Houston and New Orleans and from Atlanta, we continued to drive up to New York. Quite a drive for a month. But we saw a lot, and a lot of countryside.
I'm trying to do what I can, for the environment, but I won't quit traveling. Hard to go to the Caribbean without flying. I do drive a fuel economical car though, and recycle about everything that we have containers for in Sweden

Follow the money... well said. 12Billion profit is a strong motive not to think outside the box when it comes to alternative energy. The problem is real and the solutions will take a Manhattan Project style effort. But we are too distracted by what the 24 hour all day news programs stuff down our throats...preachers who love the spot light, govenors who can't keep their pants zipped, mayors committing perjury. In the words of Bill Cosby.. "Come on People".
