Actually, you could buy rum or whatever at the duty-free shops at the airport once you go through security (I *think* STT has those? Or maybe I'm thinking of Princess Juliana on SXM). Anyway, you can purchase liquids containing >3 ounces once inside the security area and then carry them on.

Yes, if you buy duty free at the airport it is still considered one of your two carry on items. So, if you already have two things you'll need to check something. We've bought duty free at the airport on four occasions and have always checked the box. We've never had a direct flight, but the box has always made it back to Boston and nothing's been broken.

No, there is no liquor for sale in the STT airport once you clear security. You have to buy it at the small shop near baggage claim. In fact, the little shop in the STT airport terminal doesn't even have bottled water! You have to go to the snack stand for that.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.
