Aren't pates a lot like pasties? (No, guys, that's not "pastys"!) When we lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for a year, pasties were a big deal. Sort of like a pot pie in the form of a turnover. Am I on the right track?

I keep saying this, but Sosa's offers a bunch of food for very little money...and it is a fun time. The food is not Stone Terrace, but more like something your mom would make if your mom was from Puerto Rico...and liked to cook...and knew how to cook. We took all four kids there and they had a blast.

I would liken pasties to Hostess pies, without the suger topping and filled with meat. I know, it sounds pretty gross...but, it is pretty good. But, if you have a sensitive stomach, I would recommend eating them while heading back to the villa as opposed to on your way to a beach without "facilities." Enough said.

A paté is pronounced the same way you would the liver concoction that you would spread on your toast points. pat tay.
It is often described as similar to an apple turnover, but is usually fried!

Thanks all for your suggestions!

I had to laugh about the pate conversation and will have to tell hubby about the confusion in both what it is as well as pronunciation. While bar-hopping/drunk shopping in STJ a few years back, I had a great moment at hubby's expense wondering "what is this pate (pate pronounced like hate) they advertise at all these restaurants?" Realizing my hubby has this stellar vocabulary, I burst out in cackles when I told him "pate ("pat-ay") you dumba$$ -- spreadable goose liver!!"

I guess he wasn't the dumba$$ after all....

Some of the less expensive places on STJ we have liked include Island Blues, Shipwreck Landing, Banana Deck, Miss Vies, and the Beach Bar. John likes Uncle Joe’s BBQ (me not so much)…Skinny Legs is cheap--another John favorite that’s not on my top 10 list. Another thing to consider to keep both costs and portions down is to split stuff. Sometimes we’ll order two appetizers and one entrée to split. It is more than enough food, and we’ve never gotten grief about it.
It's like looking in your soup and finding a whole different alphabet.

The pizza place next door to Joes Rumshack is good - and only $2 or $3 per slice. Can't beat it after a night of bar-hopping.

We have people meeting us that don't get in to the airport till 8:15pm. Where would be a good place to eat that won't be closing it's doors on us if we wait for them?

I really appreciate this post. I'm taking my family of ten (including three teenage grandsons) to St. John in August. I'm SLIGHTLY concerned about what I'll end up paying for meals. We are not staying at a villa or taking food along since we are going with carry-on only. Thanks

If you don't have drinks ($$) a burger and fries at Morgans Mango is (I think) $10.00 and is fabulous :)

For a cheap meal, our family like pizza night at the Donkey Diner in Coral Bay. That only happens on Wednesday and Friday, so you'll have to plan around it. We paid $90 for quesadillas for 4 at Island Blues, and I hate to put that in the inexpensive category... That did include 2 desserts.
