Hello fellow Mainer! I was born and raised there, made a career move to KC when I was 41.
My family and I went to St. John for the first time this year and none of us knew how to snorkel so we hired Pam Gaffin ( you have to get her book too, invaluable) on our first full day to give us a lesson. I think her charge was 195.00 for 3-4 hours and it was money well spent. She is quite the character, we met her downtown, jumped in her car and she took us on a tour, then took us to maho and had us snorkeling like pros in no time. I am really glad we had a lesson and she also pointed out names of fish and coral....it was perfect. You can reach her via email which is in her book.
We rented our equipment from low key water sports and we loved our snorkel gear, it was very good quality, we had no troubles. here's their website: http://www.divelowkey.com/
