Neat class and count me in the bunch that wants to hear your results...I think these forums are fascinating from a social interaction perspective.
Many of the same archetypes we see in our places of business, neighborhoods, churches and other social organizations are not only present in these online communities, but also much more prolific because people can be less inhibited behind a veil of anonymity.
In fact a lot of the threads on here get the Snow White treatment as I like to call it. In this case, Snow White is an original poster making an allegedly innocent or innocuous comment/inquiry and depending on how engaging or provocative the topic, you'll invariably get some or all 7 Dwarfs coming to the rescue:
Bashful - Humble poster that doesn't purport themselves as an expert and doesn't want to make any waves, so they almost offer their two cents apologetically and with little authority.
Doc - Very surgical in their responses...no fluff. Just the facts handed down with authority and precision. Don't question, just do what I say.
Sleepy - If there's a debate, this is the poster that comes in with, "I don't see what the big deal is, let's just all relax and take a nap on the beach" response.
Sneezy - This poster doesn't mean any harm and doesn't have an agenda, but usually makes waves anyway by throwing out a hot or contrary opinion.
Dopey - The blissfully ignorant poster that didn't come here for an education, they're just happy to be here and appreciate the social aspects of the community...a few laughs and some pretty pictures.
Grumpy - Ah yes, the misanthrope...they will always find a way to locate the rain cloud on STJ...there's always a grey lining with them..."STJ is the most wonderful place on Earth....not for the slaves that used to live here" or "I just totally scored the most awesome villa...yeah, but you can't walk to the beach and there's no AC in the living room."
Happy - Fortunately, we also have posters that always see and find ways to accentuate the positive.
And not everyone falls perfectly into one of these seven archetypes, in fact, there's probably a little of all 7 in each of us depending on our mood that day and reaction to the original topic. And there are probably more archetypes.
But you want to know what else is interesting, I've actually found that it takes all kinds to make an online community like this one truly great. Even the Grumpies. Having just one kind of poster or trying to mitigate the effects or remove another kind of poster doesn't improve the community. In fact, communities are usually at their best when they are addressing a more pressing social issue or problem. The individual may get it wrong, but the community more often than not, gets it right.
Yeah, I know, I've probably thought about this a little too much...and I'm not even taking a class.

Fun and funny post! Proud to consider myself a "Seasoned Local" who feels very at home in our "local" truck.

This! And hi, I am Libby, a planning parrot fish, who wants so bad to be a seasoned local.

Re: What Kind Of VIOL Forum Member Are You?
There are certainly a few Rain Clouds over on TripAdvisor...one of them in particular makes me want to pull my hair out!
I was in St. John about a year ago when someone posted a question about rain. I posted and said that it had been raining quite a bit. It was literally monsooning as I was typing my response. This poster responded and said it was beautiful and essentially said I was lying ... as I was sitting in a storm. Ugh. Made me nuts.

54b I love this post! I remember about 2 years ago you had a run on posts as you were prepping for your trip and I found myself eagerly awaiting your next thought. You truly have a way with words that leave us wanting more. I look forward to your trip planning this year. Hope you and your wife have a blast! Enjoy the anticipation!

Wow, thanks, Barb and to the other commenters who also alluded to past posts...I'd forgotten about the "Deep Thoughts" run...I guess they weren't deep enough for meBarb Y wrote:54b I love this post! I definitely flock back to this Forum every year about this time as I get ready for another trip. I don't think I come here as often in the late summer and fall because I get preoccupied with football and holidays (or just don't want to be reminded that STJ is still many months away). But now I'm counting the days to June. And I love the fact that I learn something new about STJ almost every time read the Forum.
I'll have to find something fun to mark the lead up to the this year's trip. This is our 2nd year in a row going with another couple and our kids. It's definitely a different adventure than when going just as a couple, but I really, really enjoyed it last year...and probably because I got lots of good advice from this Forum.
It’s not about yesterday or tomorrow...It’s about today, for come what may – Sun, rain, or hurricane – we've only time for a smile, and none for sorrow

I'm not worthy. The Best, well thought out post on any forum ever. Yet, I get the sense and satisfaction that you did it for Our enlightenment and not to have your ego stroked(for us to say What a Post) for being so detailed and showing off your interlect and writing prowess.
You sir, have me smiling at your assesments of all the plebocites that get to go to STJ.
Thankk God we have a place like STJ that gives us such inspiration.
Dave
Anthony, please put this post at the TOP...

Don't know that it's fully deserved, but certainly appreciate the high praise...and definitely not an ego trip, just two passions colliding (STJ and creative writing). I figure if you're posting with relative anonymity on a message board for personal gain, you probably need to rethink your strategy.Bigcheeze wrote:I'm not worthy. Regardless, it's nice to escape "day-to-day" me and be 54b for a few minutes here and there much in the same way we love being more like the people we strive to be - more empathetic, patient, happy - when we're on vacation on STJ.
Thanks again to all for the nice compliments and feedback and yes, Thank God for STJ.
