Conrad Sutton
It is annoying that those of you not treated rudely at Conrad Suttons assume that those of us who were treated badly deserved it because we were rude or did not greet them in a friendly manner. We went for the first time, this year, the first thing out of my mouth was hello how are you? The rudeness from Carmen was so outrageous and persistant, it was laughable. The car was in good shape, but it had a tire that needed air, Carmen insisted that it did not need air. That wasnt a great start, since we had to go get the air for the tire first thing on the island.
Their parking worked well for us.
Cool Breeze 2yrs ago rented us an absolute wreck of a car. Falling apart, ripped interior, the defogger didnt work, no wiper fluid. So, the experience at Sutton's was much better, because the car was relatively new and not at all broken.

The Suttons have 2 daughters who could not be more unalike. One is sullen and truly (God help her) horrible; one is gracious and lively and charming.
The way you are received when you arrive at their storefront has little to do with how you greet them. It all depends on who is manning the desk.
Even Conrad himself can be warm or chilly; he's part of the island vibe. But really, it's the mean daughter who gives them a somewhat undeserved rep.
His cars are very well-maintained. For some reason, they always have very few miles on them! You can park in his lot no matter how crowded it may seem...later, your car will be lovingly parked somewhere easy for you to depart from.
We always use them; Conrad Sutton is a good island business.

I have a humorous story re: dealing with them, but first I gotta say that it amazes me as to how often they come up as a topic on this board, and the emotions they bring out. And it's been going on for years!
On our first trip to STJ we rented a Vitara from them. We were spaced from the trip down there, new to the islands, and we were second in line to pick up a car. The guy in front of us somehow had really irritated Gladys and it was anything but pleasant to watch. When it was our turn she was already mad at the world and seemed like she could go postal on all tourists at any moment. After filling out the paperwork we went outside to get the car from Conrad who also had just finished with the less then happy folks ahead of us. He wasn't in a very nice mood. He went through all of the motions of explaining his rules for his car, and then made sure that we marked every scratch and dent on the paper and told us that we would be responsible for any new damages when returning the car. I was pretty intimidated by the whole thing. So anyway, after 10 days it was time to go and turn the car in. I vacuumed the car, I washed the car at the villa and while doing so noticed a missing nut and bolt on the fender that I hadn't noticed before and the fender was kind of dangling. Gosh, Did I do that? I didn't think that I had, but I assumed the worst. That guy's gonna kill me! I dug around the villa and found a nut and bolt that I secured the fender with and drove to town to turn the car in. Conrad came out , I said " Good Morning" with my best country boy smile, and he just looked the car over, looked at me, looked again at the car, [which was clean enough to send it right back out to the next client] and handed me my receipt, never saying a word! I thanked him, wished him a good day. He just stared at me. It was really weird.
