A nice bed & breakfast in Charlotte Amalie. Ronnie, the proprietor (and a hoot to boot) will pick you up at the airport and in the morning you can walk down the hill to the ferry. No cab fares and a reasonable price for an overnight.

I've been thinking about you all morning, at work.
Perhaps it's just me, but I would NOT want to drive across island, on the wrong side of the road, negotiating curves and switchbacks with donkeys, deer and whatever else around the next curve, in the dark on my first day of vacation.
Maybe you've done a ton of research and are also much braver than me (which is totally possible cause I'm a nervous nellie), but I would recommend staying on St. Thomas the first night, enjoying a nice dinner and sunset. Wake up the next morning, and head to St. John to begin your adventure there....

I've stayed at Maho Bay, Concordia's sister resort, many times without renting a car. However, I would not consider staying at Concordia without a rental car. Only one beach is accessible without a car -- Salt Pond, about a 15 minute hike down a trail. Otherwise, you would have to take the bus into Cruz Bay and pick up a taxi to visit any of the beautiful North Shore Beaches. As mentioned earlier, the bus is very unreliable, so you may end up spending hours at the bus stop, or hitching, just to get your day started.
I believe Concordia has an arrangement with a taxi driver. About two years ago, a one-way trip was about $15.00 per person into Cruz Bay. If this rate is still current, it would cost $60 for two to go into Cruz Bay and back by taxi. You can rent a car for just a few dollars more per day.
