Help the cats of St. John

hi Shelley. the cats are our no.1 ! priority when we are there. we always buy dry cat food and canned food for our visitors to our villa.

next time we will go to all the feeding stations. it has been a huge dream to move to stj, get a job etc. etc... work at the animal shelter and take care of the cats on a daily basis. only thing stopping me is rent on stj..to high priced.

oh what a dream!!

Never been much of a cat person until we got these 2 guys. Thanks for posting. Would love to help out.

I've watched ol' Pirate Bill for a long time. He loves the cats for sure. He also is a pretty good hustler of tourists and I wish him the best on getting a van together with gas, no less. Couldn't happen to a more deserving old deep diver Bohemian.

Now I am sucker for cats, which is why I have seven! I am fostering two right now that are wild and will not let me touch them let alone pick them up. They are kind of stuck here for now or forever if Mrb okays it. I am not allowed to adopt anymore but we will do all we can while we are there this year. I had conflicted emotions last year when we did not have a villa kitty. I missed my own cats but was happy because it meant not so many strays. I thought I heard that the problem was getting better on the islands but maybe they meant it is just now getting some much needed attention from people besides rescue. I'll never understand why people don't get their cats fixed. There are always so many in shelters. I can't work at the shelter anymore because I will end up taking more home. I was persuaded to take the two foster kitties and can I give them back now? No, and they knew that. They don't help with the housework either

hi shelley, lol lol i know they need me and i need them. it breaks my heart to know i have to leave them everytime i have to go home.

if only i could find a place to stay like a caretakers job... would be a OK with me. well that is part of my dream too. suitcase is ALWAYS packed and ready to go.

by the way i have 4 cats. two girls and two boys. love these guys

Teresa Rae and all who are interested, here is the response we received about Paypal and donations:

If they pay with a credit card, PayPal extracts a small percentage, so a direct check is always better, but PayPal does pay with "impulse donations" not requiring the follow through of writing and mailing a check. So we are glad to receive either way. Thanks for helping us care.

MrsB, I know exactly what you mean about getting cats fixed…millions of them (and dogs too) are put down in shelters every year. It is just terrible. Great pets die by the thousands every single day, and it is tragic. You can get reduced fee or even free spays/neuters at all over the place, so there really is no excuse. I volunteer at a no-kill shelter (and yes, it is VERY HARD not to take them home), and a lot of our rescues were on the verge of being euthanized at the pound before we got them...and they're great animals too…we only have so much room though and we can’t save them all.

Our first trip to St. John was in late August of 2001. The sense of awe of the discovery of such a unique place was overwhelming.

We returned home to downtown Manhattan and a couple of weeks later, our lives were changed forever. As we looked out our windows each day to the smoke of the remnants of the Twin Towers, we found solace in our memories of our time together as a family on St. John.

A few days after September 11th, my husband said, "We need a kitten, we need hope." And so, our cat, Bruno, joined our family. He sleeps every night on my pillow. He gives us more than he will ever know. He's connected to St. John in a strange way. We're all connected in some magical way. Thanks.
